Background: The Archimedes Screw Pump

The Greek inventor/engineer/scientist Archimedes is credited with the development of the screw pump.  Ancient drawings show how these pumps have been used since 200-300 BCE.

Amazingly, this method of water pumping is still used in irrigation.  The video below has a segment in the last third of the video that shows the pump being used to irrigate crops.  The video also shows the shaduf and the noria. (The sound is poor quality as it is old film footage converted to digital.)

The Archimedes screw is also used in modern industry and agriculture to move solid materials. See the video below:
