Home Explorations: Drawing with Magnets

Overview

Using iron filings and a magnet, students can arrange “hair” on a picture of their choice.  This activity is a combination of STEM and Art!

Materials Required

• A picture of your choice

• Cardboard backing

• Glue

• Tape

• Plastic sheet

• Iron filings

• Small magnet

Directions (Printable form at HOME EXPLORATIONS- DRAWING (PRINT) PDF.PDF )

 1) Find a picture that you will want to alter with “hair.”  This example shows a picture of a bald and clean shaven Dwayne Johnson.

2) Glue the picture to a cardboard backing.

3) Place two layers of tape around the picture so that it is framed with masking tape.

4) Scatter a teaspoon full of iron filings on the picture.

5) Place a plastic sheet on top of the picture and iron filings.

6) Tape the plastic sheet on top of the picture so that it forms a secure frame around the picture.  You don’t want to have any iron filings escape!

7) Use a magnet to move the iron around the picture…be creative!
