January...Commitment!

The character word of the month is commitment. This means to "be true to your word." Our lessons focused on doing what you say you are going to do, not giving up and following through to the end. Many times this can be difficult but the feelings of satisfactions and sense of accomplishment that you get can be very rewarding.

Our first lesson of the month we used the example of an old fable..."The Tortoise and the Hare."

The rabbit had all the skills and natural ability to make his race against the turtle a "no contest", but he did not stay committed to the race. This allowed the turtle, was slow, steady and committed to the race, to come away with the victory!

After reading the story and discussing, we watched the following cartoon for a more visual aid:

In Kindergarten, we followed up this lesson on Commitment with another lesson that brought back our friend Fozzie Bear. Fozzie learned about responsibility last time, but this time Fozzie has to practice really hard to make the swim team. He is unable to meet the swim team requirements at first, but after staying committed and practicing, he succeeds!

We also used another cartoon to show that hard work and commitment pays off. "The Wise Little Hen" gives us a great example of working hard and reaping the benefits of staying committed to your task. It takes a little work to enjoy some things, but in the end it is worth it.
