2021-2022 Counseling Lessons

Welcome!

Hey friends!

I can't wait to spend time with you all in the counseling classroom this year! The focus for the counseling classroom this year is going to be all about our Feelings and Emotions. Every lesson will be focused on the teaching and learning about the various emotions we all encounter and how to manage those feelings in a positive and healthy way!

We will be using some stories and activities from the author and illustrator Diane Alber. She uses her pictures and stories to introduce us to "A Little Spot of Emotion." We will look at 7 different SPOTS of emotion: Happiness, Confidence, Love, Anger, Sadness, Anxiety and Peace. As we talk about these different "spots of emotion" we will learn realistic coping strategies that are easy to understand and that we can apply in our everyday lives.

I am looking forward to spending time with you all and I wish you well!

Check back here later on and you can find brief overviews of our lessons here!

September Counseling Lesson #1

Hey Friends!

For our first lesson we are going to be working on our EMOTIONAL VOCABULARY! Emotions and feelings are often used together, BUT emotions usually come after a series of feelings. We are going to practice learning to recognize feelings and emotions in ourselves and others. In order to manage our feelings and emotions, we must understand them!

In order to do this we are going to learn new vocabulary that helps us to describe our feelings and emotions and learn how to identify emotions when they happen simultaneously. We are also going to be introduced to our learning series "A Little Spot of..." that we will be using for all of our lessons this year.

Check out the video that we used for part of our lesson in the link above! I wish you well friends!

September Counseling Lesson #2

Hey Friends!

Last visit we worked on identifying emotions and building up our emotional vocabulary. This week we are going to continue doing the same thing, but we are also going to read "A Little Scribble SPOT" and learn how Scribble Spot untangles his emotions!

Scribble Spot can get all tangled up with all of the emotions that he is feeling inside. Scribble Spot has learned that in order to untangle his emotions, he has to stop and identify what he is feeling and what he is not feeling. Do you know how to untangle your feelings?

Check out the video to hear the book in the link above! I wish you well friends!

October Counseling Lesson #1

Hey Friends!

Welcome back for another counseling lesson! For this lesson we are going to be learning about FACIAL EXPRESSIONS and BODY LANGUAGE. When we get done with this lesson you will be able to identify facial expressions in yourself and others and will have learned how to recognize and express feelings. FACIAL EXPRESSIONS are made using the muscles in the face that express a feeling or emotion. We use these FACIAL EXPRESSIONS to communicate how we are feeling without saying a word.

We use BODY LANGUAGE to express our feelings by the way we move our bodies. Sometimes you can tell how someone is feeling by just watching how they look and act. To help us learn these things we are going to read the book "A Little SPOT of Feelings: Emotion Detective". Understanding our FACIAL EXPRESSIONS and BODY LANGUAGE can help us get along and communicate better with others.

Check out the video that we used for part of our lesson in the link above! I wish you well friends!

October Counseling Lesson #2

Hey Friends!

Welcome back for another counseling lesson! For the second lesson, in October, we did an arts and crafts project where we made our very own SPOT feeling buddy puppets. Every single student in Kindergarten and 1st grade got to color, cut and glue their puppets together. We had a great time doing this and now everyone has their own SPOT feeings!

Next lesson we will be looking more at each individual feeling and emotion. Until then...I hope you use your SPOT puppets to help you identify how you are feeling and to talk about your emotions. You can continue to watch and pay attention to other people's facial expressions and body language as well!

See you next time! I wish you well friends!
