Honors English 1B

Honors English 1B

Prerequisite: English 1A. If the student did not take Honors English 1A, he/she must complete and submit the Honors English Contract.

Considerations: This option is for 9th graders who seek enrichment in language arts. Honors English 1B is highly recommended for students who plan to take AP English Literature and Composition (11th grade) and DMACC Composition/AP English Language and Composition (12th grade).

Honors English 1B students cover the English 1B curriculum (see the 1B course description). However, the honors section will provide students with more challenge and rigor. This course will develop the skills required for Advanced Placement English courses.

English 1B Course Description: This semester focuses on composition (writing), public speaking, poetry, the study of the Shakespearean play Romeo and Juliet, the play Twelve Angry Men, and the book Night. Students write and speak to inform, to describe, and to narrate. The writing process (draft, edit, revise, polish) is emphasized. Basic mechanics of writing are reviewed. For presentations, students learn public speaking techniques as well as how to formulate outlines. This course also includes independent reading.
