AP English Literature & Composition

THIS YEAR-LONG COURSE IS THE HONORS ALTERNATIVE OF ENGLISH 3A AND ENGLISH 3B.

Prerequisites: English 1A and 1B, English 2A and 2B. See "highly recommended" below.

Highly recommended: Previous experience in Honors English courses

Considerations: This two-semester elective is suggested for students who are ready for greater challenge in language arts. AP Literature and Composition is recommended for students who plan to take DMACC Composition I / AP English Language and Composition. Students are required to complete teacher-specified reading and writing over the summer. During the year, students can expect daily reading, discussions, and frequent writing assignments. In May, students are expected to take the AP English Literature and Composition exam.

Course Description: AP Literature and Composition requires students to do close reading and critical analysis of American literature and other selected works. Students will view their reading through different literary lenses. Writing assignments--largely expository, analytical, and argumentative essays--focus on the critical analysis of literature. Units will spiral three times through the cycle of short stories, poetry, and longer fiction. Students will also write a research paper in preparation for DMACC Comp after the AP exam in May.
