Honors English 1A

Prerequisite: None. However, the student must complete and submit the English Honors Contract.

Considerations: This option is for 9th graders who seek enrichment in language arts. Honors English 1A is highly recommended for students who plan to take AP English Literature and Composition (11th grade) and DMACC Composition/AP English Language and Composition (12th grade).

Honors English 1A students cover the English 1A curriculum (see the 1A course description below). However, the honors section will provide students with more challenge and rigor. This course will develop the skills required for Advanced Placement English courses.

English 1A Course Description: This semester focuses on composition (writing), literature, and public speaking. Students write and speak to demonstrate, to inform, and to persuade; for some projects, students gather information through research. The writing process (draft, edit, revise, polish) is emphasized. Students read short stories, To Kill a Mockingbird, and poetry. Basic mechanics of writing and parts of speech are reviewed. For presentations, students learn public speaking techniques as well as how to formulate outlines and bibliographies. This course also includes independent reading.
