An awkward silence after asking participants a question is almost inevitable. Even the most engaging instructors have encountered it. How you respond to those few moments can set you apart as a rock star trainer. Here are a few tips to stay confident while navigating those uncomfortable pauses:
1. Stop talking—once you ask the question, be silent and let your participants think. It will take some people up to 20 seconds to pause, reflect and prepare their response.
2. Wait—I just mentioned that it could take up to 20 seconds for people to formulate their response. Let them process their thoughts. Try it now! Slowly count to 20 (1-one thousand, 2-one thousand, etc.) and get the feel for how long that really is.
3. Acknowledge and affirm—when participants do respond to your questions, respond back with positive remarks to encourage future discussion.
4. Prepare them to respond—Ask participants to write down their answer. After 20 seconds, ask them to read what they wrote.
5. Pair and share—still hearing crickets? Ask them to turn to their neighbor and share.
