“Saying ‘No’ thoughtfully may be the most undervalued capacity of our times.” This quote, recently stated in a Harvard Business Review article, is no less true in church world than in the marketplace. And yet, as the old cliché says, “Saying ‘No’ really does mean saying ‘Yes’ to something else.”
Truth be told, we tend to like saying yes and all too often, we feel it is the only option available to us. However, consider the following as you make choices about that which you choose to do and that which you don’t.
When we pause before saying yes, we allow a vertical conversation to take place. “God, is this what You would have me do?”
Prioritizing requires reflection and time. Yet, it may save us time in the long run because a better choice is made.
Finally, pausing before making a decision allows you to truly know your choice was thought through and the right thing for the moment.
