UMUC Volunteer of the Month

Post date: Mar 27, 2017 3:48:53 PM

Did you know that you can nominate yourself or another UMUC student/alum for the UMUC Volunteer of the Month? A year ago, UMUC created a new initiative to recognize students and alumni for the work they do giving back to UMUC and to their community. Each month, a nominated student or alumnus is chosen to be the UMUC Volunteer of the Month. The recipient of this award is showcased on UMUC’s Web site, UMUC’s social media pages, and is given a certificate. Previous winners and nomination criteria is available here: http://www.umuc.edu/current-students/student-life-and-support/volunteer-of-month.cfm.

In the past year, the award has been given out to twelve recipients, five of which are Alpha Sigma Lambda members. It is great to see our members so well represented! I have added some information below about our member awardees. You can also read more about them on the UMUC Volunteer of the Month Web site.

Alex Deac, March 2016 winner, Spring 2013 inductee

Awarded for his commitment within the Allies Mentoring Program, where he helped students like himself who were transitioning from a different career into the computer science field.

Antoine Boyd, April 2016 winner, Spring 2012 inductee

Awarded for his commitment within the Allies Mentoring Program, helping business, finance, and accounting majors who were starting at UMUC.

Yvonne Davis, September 2016 winner, Spring 2010 inductee

Awarded for her work as student president of another honor society she was a member of, the UMUC Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi. In this role, she organized a book drive to donate to a local children’s hospital.

Seth Barksdale, November 2016 winner, Fall 2015 inductee

Awarded for his time helping his classmates within his computing courses. Seth started out voluntarily helping other students in his class who were new to computing, and has extended his service to the WiseGuy peer tutoring platform.

Philippe Ki, February 2017 winner, Spring 2014 inductee

Awarded for volunteering for the Allies Mentoring Program for two years and for his recent tutoring through the WiseGuy peer tutoring platform.

Congratulations to Alex, Antoine, Yvonne, Seth, and Philippe, and thanks for your commitment to others! Thanks for representing the Tau Chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda within UMUC’s student body!

To our membership: If you wish to nominate yourself or another student or alum for this award, please visit the Web site above and submit your nomination to engagement@umuc.edu. Please note, the award can be given to students and alumni for their volunteer work within their own communities, not just the UMUC community.
