2020-21 Tau Chapter Scholarship Recipients

Meet our Tau Chapter Scholarship Winners! Below you can learn more about four of the five scholarship recipients. The Tau Chapter Scholarship is given out over the summer. In the spring and summer, members can apply by going through UMGC's financial aid process- completing the FAFSA and then filling out the Scholarship Application. On the application, members need to note their membership in Alpha Sigma Lambda and should discuss scholarship and leadership in their personal statement. This year, all recipients were awarded $2000.

Tilandra Rhyne, Spring 2015 Tau Chapter Inductee

I am eternally grateful to receive this scholarship. It came as a complete surprise and certainly helps me with staying the course of completing my program. I graduated from UMGC magna cum laude in May 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in Communications Studies. In May 2020, I completed the graduate certificate program in Leadership and Management, and after a short break I am on course to complete my MBA, hopefully by Summer 2021.

Currently, I work at Montgomery College where I oversee the administrative and financial operations of the Nursing program and the Health Sciences programs' grants financial management. I have been with the college for 12 years and have been in my current role for the last three years. My future career aspirations include taking on progressively responsible roles to gain tangible professional experience that will potentially lead to a program/project management position.

Jessica Strader, Spring 2019 Tau Chapter Inductee

My name is Jessica Kozuwa Strader, I am twenty-seven years old, married, and I currently have one fur baby. I have been blessed to have the opportunity to live and travel around Europe, seeing amazing things along the way. I am currently pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in psychology at UMGC.

My main goal for my education is to obtain my Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree, learning as much as possible along the way. Achieving these goals will allow me to seek out a career in mental health counseling. Overall, my main goal in life is to use my education to help those in need. I have spent over one-hundred hours volunteering with a non-profit and found it to be an extreme passion of mine. I am grateful for the opportunities I have been provided and I am honored to be a member of Alpha Sigma Lambda.

Christopher Walk, December 2019 Tau Chapter Inductee

Christopher Walk is from Colorado Springs, Colorado. He is a senior at UMGC and studies Psychology. Additionally, he has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout his tenure at UMGC. He is an Air Force veteran and currently works on McConnell Air Force Base as a government contractor. He plans on attending UMGC to pursue his master’s degree in the spring.

Elisabeth Ariel Woodworth, Spring 2020 Tau Chapter Inductee

Elisabeth works for a local parks and recreation department. It is her hope to work in local, state or federal government when she earns her B.S. in Environmental Management with a minor in Natural Science. Her goal is to work in coastal zone management and natural resources planning upon graduation, and it is very likely that she will eventually pursue a Master’s degree to support that goal. She looks forward to a career spent restoring wetlands and helping to prevent coastal flooding due to climate change.
