2018-19 Tau Chapter Scholarship Winners

Learn more about this year's five scholarship winners! These recipients were chosen due to the leadership and scholarship they portrayed within their scholarship essays.

Josh McDonald, Spring 2016 inducteeCurrently pursuing: Master’s Degree in cybersecurity management Josh McDonald finished his undergraduate degree at UMUC in 2016, majoring in computer networks and security, with a 3.8 GPA. He is projected to graduate at the end of 2019 and is excited to finally say he is finished with school! In addition to his Alpha Sigma Lambda membership, Josh is a member of Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the honor society for computing and IT majors.

Josh has always been interested in technology and decided to pursue a career in cybersecurity. He had the opportunity to get into the field through an internship program when he was pursuing his Bachelor's degree. He was converted to a full-time employee and has been working his way up the chain. Josh enjoys the consistent change and challenges that the field brings. He plans to continue his career in the field and work towards a managerial role. Josh resides in southern Maryland.

“I am extremely grateful being chosen for the generous scholarship this semester from the Alpha Sigma Lambda family,” says Josh. “I just wanted to say thank you very much for the support and the opportunity!”

Rachel Bollinger, Spring 2017 inducteeCurrently pursuing: Bachelor’s degree in psychology and social science (double major) Rachel Bollinger is a senior at UMUC-Asia, and is currently living in Okinawa, Japan. Following her projected graduation in 2019, she plans to pursue a Master’s degree in Social Work with hopes of becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, advocating for the elderly. Rachel is an Air Force spouse, mother, and originally from St. Louis, Missouri.

“This is incredibly exciting, as I’ve never been the recipient of any scholarship before, let alone one for my academic achievements!” says Rachel. She is thankful for the scholarship opportunities of the chapter.

Valantin Ndam, Fall 2016 inductee Currently pursuing: Master’s degree of healthcare administrationValantin Ndam’s dedication to his education shows through his decision to continue to a Master’s degree after graduating Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Services Management. After his Master’s degree, Valantin plans on pursuing a Ph.D. in Public Health. His career aspiration consists of working for a government agency in a position where he can write healthcare policies and procedures that will be tailored to better serve communities around the country and abroad.

Besides being a full-time student, Valantin is a national notary public, and a goal-driven, responsible, and compassionate health care professional who has held several positions within the healthcare industry. When away from studies, Valantin loves playing competitive volleyball, classical and modern piano pieces, and guitar. He enjoys traveling, painting, listening to music, physical activities, watching movies, and spending time with friends and family.

“After overcoming many obstacles, I am grateful for the recognition of commitment, dedication, and hard work by the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society,” says Valantin. “I hope I will encourage young adults to never stop dreaming and to push forward in life regardless of obstacles and difficulties.”

Karibbein Boateng, Spring 2018 inducteeCurrently pursuing: Bachelor’s degree in finance Karibbein Boateng is eager to complete her finance degree with a concentration in small business management and entrepreneurship next year. Upon graduation, she hopes to become a financial advisor and to continue to obtain a Master’s degree in the financial field. She is 22 years old.

Felicia Zimmer, Fall 2017 inducteeCurrently pursuing: Bachelor’s degree in psychology Felicia is excited she has been awarded a Tau Chapter Scholarship.
