2019-20 Tau Chapter Scholarship Winners

Post date: Sep 9, 2019 9:04:40 PM

I am happy to announce that we were able to award 5 students with Alpha Sigma Lambda-Tau Chapter scholarships for the 2019-20 academic year. Students who submit a FAFSA and scholarship form are eligible for the scholarship. Decisions are made in the summer for the upcoming year.

This, I'd like to highlight two of our scholarship winners, starting with the two below:

Christy Gilliland, Spring 2015 Tau Chapter Inductee

Currently pursuing: Master of Science in information technology with a concentration in software engineering

I have been going to school part-time since 2009 and have successfully completed two associate degrees, three certificates, and a bachelor's degree. I am currently working on my Master's in Software Engineering. I am a lead developer for a massive US NAVAIR contract and plan to stay in this career trajectory for as long as possible. I have been happily married for 16 years and we have 2 beautiful children. I had a ruptured brain aneurysm in November of 2017 and was given a less than 1% chance of surviving without disabilities. After 27 days in the ICU, I beat all odds and have since recovered 100%. I cannot and will not be stopped!

Alicia Young, Fall 2018 Tau Chapter Inductee

Currently pursuing: Bachelor’s degree with a double major in psychology and investigative forensics

My name is Alicia, and if you had asked me ten years ago where I would be, the answer would not have been here. Ten years ago, I was a high school drop-out with no plans for my future, except to live. Today, I am married to a United States Navy sailor, and we have two amazing children. The support of my husband allowed me to follow my dreams at UMUC. It is only with that support that I was confident enough to go after not one major, but two. I am about four semesters shy of completing my Bachelor’s degree in both psychology and investigative forensics. I am not sure that this will be the end of my college adventure, because now that I know what I am capable of, I want so much more.

Stay tuned to learn about the other winners!
