Dear Alpha Sigma Lambda Society and Members,

I am writing to express my gratitude to you for awarding me the 2014 fall scholarship. When I received notification that I had been chosen for the award I was very excited. I felt a sense of accomplishment and was thrilled to discover that Alpha Sigma Lambda would contribute to my educational pursuit.

I’m a Psychology major with a minor in Biology and aspire to further my education so that I may help children and adolescents in the future. I come from an impoverished background and never thought I would ever make it to college. My parents met in a mental institution, married and had four children (5 including my half sister). The scholarship meant more to me than the much needed financial assistance.

Not too long ago I participated in a triathlon, and on the sidelines were volunteers providing cool drinks of water. It wasn’t just the water that helped me complete the race, it was the people on the sidelines, and it was their motivation and belief that I would finish the race. Metaphorically speaking, the scholarship was a sign from the universe; telling me that throughout the obstacles you face in life, have hope because people will be on the sidelines with a fresh drink of water cheering you on, believing in you.

The generosity and kindness from Alpha Sigma Lambda Society exceeds beyond the awarded scholarship. Tau Chapter Councilor Shelley Hintz gave me the opportunity to volunteer as a mentor within the society. Throughout the mentoring program she continued to communicate with me and provide tips and resources so that I may share them with my mentees. As an out of state student, Ms. Hintz professionalism, communication, and kindness enhanced my UMUC experience.

Once again, thank you for the 2014 fall scholarship. The financial assistance allowed me to complete my final course with UMUC. I’m very excited to say that this is my last semester with UMUC, and it will be a memorable one thanks to Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society.

Sincerely,

Jazz Alice Beach
