About Us

Alpha Sigma Lambda is the premier national honor society for adult learners and is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies. Alpha Sigma Lambda (ASL) recognizes the achievements of adult students who maintain academic excellence while balancing other responsibilities in their lives. ASL encourages adult students to complete undergraduate degrees and promotes academic scholarship. ASL formed in 1945, and is the oldest and largest chapter-based honor society for adult students.  The motto of Alpha Sigma Lambda is “First in Scholarship and Leadership.

The Tau Chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda was chartered in the 1970s at the University of Maryland Global Campus (formerly UMUC).  Since then, the chapter has recognized students around the world. To qualify for membership, students must meet the following requirements:

The chapter sends invitations via e-mail to eligible students twice a year, for the fall and spring membership classes.

While academic recognition is the primary focus of the honor society, Tau Chapter members have the opportunity to participate in the chapter and to give back to the University. The chapter supports the Tau Chapter Alpha Sigma Lambda Scholarship. In addition, members of the Tau Chapter volunteer around the virtual campus community as both current students and alumni.
