Fizz, Boom, and Read Summer Reading Program Leon County Public Library

Saturday, July 26, 2014, 12;30-2:30 PM

VtS and I were part of the Summer Reading program of the Leon County Public Library called Fizz, Boom, and Read. We were two of the many volunteers helping the library staff conduct some science experiments that were fun while encouraging the kids to read. We both were at the booth where we did demonstrations of fake volcanoes using baking soda, vinegar, and detergent. Bhanu helped make the volcano and bought all the needed materials.

We put one tablespoon of baking soda mixed with one teaspoon of household dish washing detergent into the mouth of the pre-made volcano. Then we took one ounce of household vinegar and asked the patron what color they wanted the volcano fumes. Based on their choice we added either blue, green, red, orange, or yellow food coloring to the vinegar. Then we poured the vinegar to the mouth of volcano using a long stem funnel and quickly removed the funnel. Soon we could see the frothing of carbon dioxide that mixes with the detergent to simulate a volcano.

We were set-up the Meeting Room North side wall. VtS and I helped with the demonstrations. I had to run after about 1 hour of help. VtS did stay the whole time.

It was great helping the library staff and its patrons..
