But using oval select and invert selection ..... choosing feathering ......

In Gimp

Select Menu .... to pick the initial area that you want to fade to darker or to lighter ......

Select - go to the select tab (the top of gimp on the menu line) ....

pick it and a drop down menu appears ...... 4 th from the bottom

( THIS IS THE BIT THAT MATTERS )

Select

(a) "rounded rectangle" .... select slider at 50% (it should be the default)

I also shrink it here .... as shown ...

Then Select Invert or ( Ctrl + I )

(b) "invert" ......

Select

(You can also use fill with any colour you want on the outside once you have done the above steps)

you can now do a cut and as long as you have your background set to which color you want .....

it will fade to that color .....

( I have over done this as a Demo - but you can make it as subtle as you want by using a seperate layer and fade )

Wrong photo for me to do it on ..... but it shows the effect ....
