I always install Kanotix :-

( If you do this - and you find that you have no Internet connection - rectify this follow the steps below )

The first thing I do is to check that the internet is working.

Just start Firefox up - see if you can connect -

if not ......

The bottom left hand corner .............select ............ The big ............. K ....... (for the menu choices)

Next choose ...................................Control Centre ............. (Click it)

Now choose ............................... Internet and Network

And now .................................. Network Settings

( if you have a Green Tick in one of the available network interfaces - it is probably ok )

This bit you really need to know what you are doing -

( I kept going back into XP checked my network settings there before setting this up - but you may be ok )

If you know someone that can help you here - get their help - if not you can always try what I did. ........

But if your not sure or do not feel confident stop here - do some research first and tackle it later when you are sure

you know how to set this up ........

( The majority of people are not network engineers so it may seem easy to those that are )

( Anybody that wants to help here feel free to do so )

Click administrator mode - remember your password you entered when you installed Kanotix.

Enter it here.

Now you need to know some things - like your ip address - if not try to get it to autodetect for you.

Click eth1 - click Automatic - dhcp - check to activate when computer starts this way you do not have to keep

doing it manually :-

Ok if it does work - check it out -

The two monitor connection icon should appear on the right hand side of the applet bar at the bottom of the screen.

You can click it see if there is a connection - if there is then ...... ok away we go ........

By clicking on the Firefox Globe - blue - bottom left of same menu bar - you should have firefox open up and if alls ok

Check out some of the links at the top News etc .... once we have the internet connection things get easier ........

You should find out that it runs a little quicker than in XP - video especially - I hope this is the case ........

One thing that I have seen on a friends computer is when the monitor or graphics card has not been picked up correctly and the scrolling of a page is diabolical - if this is the case - update the graphics with package installer or if that fails try another version of linux....... I really hope you do not have to ......... if so

Mandriva is also easy to set up - I tried a few before I realised that Kanotix was the one that suited me and my system

It may be for you but then again it may not.

...

There is no harm in trying and usually you learn something from it

Its Life you try something

you enjoy it

You keep doing it

You do not enjoy it - then do something different

Linux Distros

You have many choices

(Kanotix is number 43 at the moment on this list)

Mainly because nobody seems to alter it anymore

But in some respects that is a good thing

Once you know what you are doing with Linux

Then you have all of the choices in the Linux Distros above to try out

Until then just get used to one that works and learn as much as you can

I have tried many

here are a few

Caledra - Red Hat - Mandrake 7.0 - Mandriva 2007 - PCLinuxOS - Myrinix - Slax - Slackware

Sidux - Ubuntu - Knoppix

I always end up going back to Kanotix

But that is me - and the beauty about Linux is that you have these choices

Similar to

Windows 95 - 98 - Millenium - NT - 2000 - XP - Vista

Who has met many people that always talk a good talk

I am always learning and am willing to learn more

As my Dad says

If you think you know everything

There is nothing for you to learn and nobody will teach you

If this has helped

Hope you enjoy it ....
