Subject: Baltimore Electronica-Fest (yesterday)

Hi all—

Spent most of yesterday at Electronica Fest 2009, hosted at the National Electronics Museum, just south of Baltimore, MD. Definitely worth the trip. There were a series of live performances on the outdoor stage (in the NEM parking lot – God knows what the people in the hotel next door must’ve thought was going on!) – and a number of exhibits and demos inside.

When the outside programming took a break (or for those seeking a change from something, er, too challenging to listen to on stage) solace could be found in the presentations inside…

We saw Greg Kist demoing what a vocoder sounds like, Peter Blasser (Ciat-Lonbarde) with some eccentric interesting self-made machines, Karl Ekdahl with a wacky bent Yamaha SHS-10 and also one of his exposed reverb spring “Moisturizer” units, the guys from Baltimore Node and Harford Hackerspace with some very nicely constructed devices (the Harford guys had a very cute self-built CNC milling machine), Art Harrison running a workshop where people could sign up and buy a theremin kit and then built it at the show, another group was showing a very simple ribbon controller sound generator that used video tape suspended over foil as a cheap and cheerful control surface that actually worked.

Ray Wilson’s Sound Lab Minisynth and Weird Sound Generators were very well represented (I saw at least one Mini Synth and effectively three WSGs – though technically two of the WSGs were in the same box, for double weirdness).

There were a couple formal presentations in the auditorium space. I did not see Anna Rubin’s, but Richard Lainhart gave a nice one outlining his background, and giving an overview of his live performance system of Buchla 200e and Haken Continuum controller. As a part of the presentation he also played a short improve piece, and a transcription of Messiean’s “Oraison” (you might’ve seen this a while back on YouTube). The Haken control surface was available for playing after the presentation – it is a very comfortable surface and far more responsive that I’d have ever imagined.

One guy’s put up some images on FlickR here:

…which includes some good pix of Richard L’s setup, Dave Vosh’s portable modular, Peter Blasser’s stuff, and some shots of the museum itself

So, “electronica-fest = geek-fest?” Well, yeah, I guess, but there was lots of interesting stuff to see and lots of interesting sounds to be heard.

Amber Dunleavey (Echolalia) on Theremin from Falls Church VA http://www.myspace.com/echolalianova

Event Date: (Saturday) September 05, 2009

Location: The National Electronics Museum (www.nationalelectronicsmuseum.org) at 1745 West Nursery Road in Linthicum, Maryland Phone: 410-765-0230.

This event was a real crowd pleaser & once again we middle-aged old men from the Baltimore SDIY Group have proven that we can put together another successful festival. A lot of people duly discovered the existence of the National Electronics Museum & electronic music, so they definitely got a "2-for-1 Special". 298 people attended this event which is not bad for the 1st time that we put on this event at the museum.

Be sure to look at the 257 photos that I took of the event in the ATTACHMENTS section below.

A sincere & heartfelt thank you goes out to the following groups & individuals -

to Hal Schmulowitz who is also part of the Baltimore SDIY Group like myself, for helping me to organize this festival. Hal, as always, I thank you for your hard work & dedication. It's been a pleasure working with you;

to Mike Simons & Gary Mauler of the National Electronics Museum who helped us coordinate this event from their end. I want to thank the National Electronics Museum, Mike Simons & Gary Mauler for hosting this event, for allowing us to showcase this event & for putting in many, many, many long hours of hard work, dedication & professionalism. Without them we could not have pulled this event off. Gary did an absolutely fantastic job with getting the kits that he sold from Paia Corporation (www.paia.com). Mike did a fantastic job of emceeing, for dressing up like Steve Irwin the Crocodile Hunter & by giving a fantastic show as he played bass guitar with his band The Tickler Coils. Those guys are good, especially the lead vocalist who wore the red glasses with the flashing led lights in them. He did some amazing Karate chop moves with his hands to get some really wild & crazy sounds from his Theremin & last but not least to Josh who ran the PA system & also plays the keyboard in The Tickler Coils;

to Art Harrison, of the Baltimore SDIY Group, for selling his Theremin kits and for assisting the many festival particpants with building their kits & explaining how the system works. He sold 20 out of 38 kits, that's a whole lot of kits. He & Amber Dunleavey put on a great performance as a Theremin duo. Amber came from Virginia to do this event with us;

to Dr Anna Rubin who demonstrated her computer music equipment. Thank you so much;

to Richard Lainhart for coming from New York & demonstrating of his Buchla synthesizer & Hakken Continuum Controller keyboard. He also put on a great performance on the outdoor stage as well;

to Peter Blasser for demonstrating his Tetrazzi device, I tried it & it is very amazing;

to Karl Ekdahl, of the Baltimore SDIY Group, for demonstrating his "Moisturizer" unit which has some very successful sales;

to Robert Mauler, who is Gary Mauler's son, for demonstrating his homemade Leslie tone wheel;

to Dave Vosh the SynthSmith, & Hal Schmulowitz for a great performance with me as the Trident Electric Company;

to Greg Kist, of the Baltimore SDIY Group, for demonstrating his Vocoder equipment & to Hal Schmulowitz for a great performance. I really like the 2nd tune with the Mission Control audio & the song Natalie which I can't get out of my head. Check out this YouTube video of their performance at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7QoVvsRCeI

to The Megadrives for a great performance;

to the Baltimore-based Harford Hackerspace for demonstrating their homebrew CNC machine & electronic music equipment. Thanks guys;

to the HacDC guys who had some unique electronic music equipment to show;

to Erich Steiger, of the Baltimore SDIY Group, who assisted Art Harrison with the Theremin kits. Thank you for volunteering;

to Keith Sinzinger, of the Baltimore SDIY Group, for giving us the email contact addresses for our press releases. Thank you so much;

to the food vendor Erica Wheeler, owner of Eliza's Coffee Pot, for the good food & the tasty Orange Sickle Smoothie drinks. Man, were those good. Thank you so much;

to Ken Brannan, owner of the Saucy Salamander Cafe & Catering Company of Annapolis MD, for putting me in touch with Erica Wheeler;

to Robert Neubauer & Ross Apperson (Bear And Lampshade) & to Myke Pollard for letting me jam with them on the indoor stage. I really had a great time guys & thanks for giving a great performance. Thank you Mr Neubauer for bringing Robert & Ross to the event;

to Mike Cobaria (micFreak) for putting on a great performance;

to Joseph Meyer (Jerohme Spye) for putting on great performance;

to Christopher Feltner (Kingdom of Sharks) for coming from Virginia & putting on a great performance;

to Ben Kelly (Mikrosopht) for coming all the way from Massachusetts to play for us & for putting on a great performance;

to all of the performers & exhibitors who put on a really fantastic show, we definitely want to work with all of you again.

to Chris Hansen whom I met yesterday in person after talking to him by email a few days ago & who has become an instant fan & walked from the Light-Rail's BWI Business District stop to the museum just to see this event was nice enough to post these photos on FLICKR. Thanks Chris, your efforts are truly appreciated - http://www.flickr.com/photos/spike55151/sets/72157622261932458/.

please be sure to read Frank Vanaman's wonderful write-up below about this event. He's also a member of our Baltimore SDIY Group.

Mike Simons, the museum's director, is already talking about us doing the 2010 Electronica Fest, so we'll see everyone again next year.

P.S. - IF ANYONE MADE ANY AUDIO RECORDINGS OF RICHARD LAINHART'S PERFORMANCES AT THIS EVENT, PLEASE CONTACT HIM AS HE IS INTERESTED IN GETTING COPIES TO SEE WHAT THEY SOUND LIKE. THANKS.
