Unlike most other airports, SEA has ramp control positions responsible for the non-movement areas. This is a more common feature of busier airports. There are two ramp positions and their areas of responsibility are split at Taxiway N (middle of the main terminal).
During events, Ramp may need to issue gate holds to manage departure flows. This means withholding push instructions and having aircraft hold at their gate for a period of time to prevent congestion elsewhere.
The only ramp locations big enough for the A380 are Cargo 2 and gate S11. If an A380 parks somewhere else, they should be asked to move to one of these locations.
See the VATUSA Master Class on Ramp Control for more tips on working this position.
Non-movement areas north of Taxiway N. Includes all ramps north of the main terminal.
North Satellite ramp always operates clockwise. The south side includes three lines for aircraft to push onto and move along.
The orange and blue lines can accommodate wingspans 118' and less, which includes B737/A320. They can be used simultaneously by these aircraft without conflict.
The green line can accommodate wingspans 135' and less. Compared to the orange/blue lines, this essentially only adds the B757.
Phraseology:
"Alaska forty-two, push onto the blue line, tail east."
For pilots lacking SEA scenery with complete ramp markings, instruct pilots:
"Pushback approved, tail [direction]."
Once push and start are complete:
"Alaska forty-two, taxi spot 66, hold short B, contact GND."
"FedEx sixty-seven, hold short A, contact GND."
Non-movement areas south of Taxiway N. Includes Cargo 7.
South ramp exits on the side closest to the departure runway.
For north flow, this is clockwise. Enter spot 88, exit spot 99.
For south flow, this is counter-clockwise. Enter spot 99, exit spot 88.
"Iceair six-eighty, taxi spot 99, hold short B, contact GND."
Instruct Cargo 7 departures to hold short of Taxiway B and contact Ground in north flow or join Taxilane W northbound in south flow.
There are no size restrictions. The skybridge has 85' of vertical clearance which is enough for any aircraft using these gates.
S11 is the only gate that is big enough for an A380. It is located on the west end of the South Satellite terminal.
