Airport Surface Detection System — Model X (ASDE-X)
The ASDE-X is a ground surveillance system using radar.
ASDE-X is only used at 2 airports in ZSE: KPDX and KSEA. All others only use the Cab view.
The ASDE-X alerts air traffic controllers of potential runway conflicts by providing detailed coverage of movement on runways and taxiways. By collecting data from a variety of sensors, ASDE-X is able to track transponder equipped vehicles and aircraft on the airport movement area.
When aircraft are on the ground, the ASDE-X will tell you if the aircraft is squawking Mode C and their assigned beacon code.
Aircraft not squawking Mode C, so you can not tell if they are squawking their beacon code.
Aircraft squawking Mode C, but they are not squawking the assigned beacon code.
Aircraft is squawking Mode C and their assigned beacon code. You can tell because you can see their callsign, A/C type, and scratchpad.
Heavy aircraft show up orange, but they have to be squawking Mode C and their assigned beacon code so the system knows who they are.
