To review, there are three main types of SIDs: pilot-nav, radar vector, and hybrid.
Pilot-nav SID: Pilot is primarily responsible for navigation along the SID route, no vectoring is required from air traffic control
Radar vector SID:Â ATC provides radar navigational guidance to a filed or assigned route
Hybrid SID: Departure that combines elements of both the pilot-nav and radar vector departures. A hybrid SID usually requires the pilot to fly a set of instructions, then be vectored to a defined route to a transition to leave the terminal area.
Chart not to scale
PDX has 6 Standard Instrument Departure Procedures (SIDs):
5 are Pilot-nav SIDs
These are for RNAV jet aircraft only
The initial altitude is 7,000
1 is a Radar Vector SID
Initial altitude depends on aircraft class:
Non-noise sensitive: 3,000
Noise-sensitive/Jets: 6,000
As of 10/31/2024, AIRAC 2411 includes the following new SID versions:
CASCD3
HRMNS6
LAVAA7
WHAMY5
Radar Vector SID
A mix of VORs and GPS waypoints are charted
All 5 charted GPS waypoints are on the RNAV SIDs (MINNE, HRMNS, CHISM, WHAMY, LAVAA)
Pilots may get radar vectors to any reasonably close point, they are not limited to the points on the chart - like COUGA
All aircraft can take this departure
The initial altitude depends on the aircraft class:
Non-noise sensitive: 3,000
Noise-sensitive/Jets: 6,000
All IFR non-turbojet aircraft will get this departure.
Also used for turbojet aircraft flying north or west to: PHNL, PANC, CYVR, KSEA...
Phraseology:
ASA1008, Cleared to SEATTLE-TACOMA INTL AIRPORT, PORTLAND2 Departure, then as filed, Maintain 6,000, Departure frequency 118.1, squawk 4757.
Note: You should not say "radar vectors" as part of the clearance for this type of departure.
