The purpose of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion is to ensure that no individual member of staff at the college is disadvantaged in realising their goals by factors such as race, religion, gender, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, age, additional caring responsibilities, religion or belief, socio-economic background or disability.
To allow all members of staff to achieve excellence in their roles, we must always aim to remove any barriers for this to happen. You can find the College's Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policy through this link.
At its core, equality means fairness: we must ensure that individuals, or groups of individuals, are not treated less favourably because of their protected characteristics.
Equality also means equality of opportunity: we must also ensure that those who may be disadvantaged can get the tools they need to access the same, fair opportunities as their peers. (The University of Edinburgh, 2021)
When we have true inclusion, it is when we have removed all barriers, discrimination and intolerance. When implemented properly, it should make everyone feel included and supported, whichever environment they are in.
Inclusion means creating an environment where everyone feels welcome and valued. An inclusive environment can only be created once we are more aware of our unconscious biases, and have learned how to manage them. (The University of Edinburgh, 2021)
Diversity is recognising, respecting and celebrating each other's differences. A diverse environment is one with a wide range of backgrounds and mindsets, which allows for an empowered culture of creativity and innovation. (The University of Edinburgh, 2021)
Just Like Us is a LGBTQ+ young people's charity which aims to allow you people who are LGBTQ+ is something to be celebrated and supported. They have created the 'School Diversity Week' which provides ideas on sessions to bring more focus on LGBTQ+ in the classroom and create a more inclusive education.
