According to JISC, Accessibility involves designing systems to optimise access. Being inclusive is about giving equal access and opportunities to everyone wherever possible. In education this involves reducing and overcoming the barriers that might occur in:
Digital content
Teaching and learning activities
Assessments
Being accessible and inclusive is about designing our curriculums with everyone in mind and to not assume any learner's perceived abilities in the classroom. As educators, we want all of the content we create to be useful and more accessible to all of our students so every learner has the ability to be able to take part and get the most out of their learning.
As an institution, we are starting to make in-roads into how we cater to every learner we enrol through different technologies so no physical or mental barrier is too much for our learners. For us to be able to do this college wide, all staff must follow the same shared vision to include accessibility into teaching. The main reason for inclusion and accessibility is Success for all - at all times.
Accessibility and Inclusion is ever-changing and there is never a silver bullet for any issue. But as an institution, we are aiming to integrate a lot of inclusive and accessible digital technology to help learners who have support needs as well as any other student at the college.
This includes inclusivity programmes such as Read&Write for learning support.
