Loom is a screen-recording tools that allows users to record quicks videos of their screens or cameras which can be instantly shared and watched anywhere.
Great tool for remote working and learning
Users can format their videos in different ways such as creating interactive GIFs
There are three main ways to be able to start using Loom:
Downloading Loom through the Chrome Web Store and adding the Loom Extension
Downloading the Loom App to your computer Desktop
Downloading the Mobile Loom App to your mobile device
You can do this by going onto Loom's website, creating an account and clicking on your initial in the top right hand corner and you will be given the three options.
A great advantage of having Loom is that you can start a screen-recording at any time and has an unlimited time-limit on the recording - so you do not have to worry about cutting short a video and missing out key pieces of information.
To start a recording, you will either need to open the Loom app or a Google Chrome browser to use the Loom Extension. Once either has been opened, you will be met with the start up menu of Loom. This provides you with different options on how to record your screen - these include:
The Camera options and whether you just want the desktop to be recorded, the camera and desktop or just your camera
You can choose which Tab you record on your browser or record the whole desktop
You can also change the camera and audio options if you have different microphones or cameras to use
Once you have amended your settings, you can Start Recording for Loom to start!
Before you start recording, you will be shown this view in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. This will give you an idea of how your camera will look in the recording and provide you with the amount of time a recording has gone on for.
When you start recording, you can choose for this view to be removed from the corner.
You can control when the recording starts and finishes. Once the recording has been completed, you will be taken to a separate browser tab in Loom.
Once you have created your Loom recording, you now have the option to edit the video and share it to others. When you are in the Loom edit space, you have a number of different ways to manipulate and change your scree-recording - this include:
Video Preferences - These allow you to change how the recording can be viewed and any of the settings for when the video is shared, for example, allowing comments on the video.
Trim Video - This allows you to trim and edit your video so it shows better to the viewer - you can cut out any spaces in speech or if there is anything in the recording that is not needed.
Call-to-Action - This creates a button which will appear on the video at a certain time of your choosing - you can add a URL link to the button so if there is an important point you made in the video, you can link the learner to the specific site with the call-to-action button.
Thumbnail - This allows you to change the image that shows when the video is not playing.
Once you have edited your Loom recording and it ready to be used as a resource, you can share the video in a couple of different ways - these are:
Share - this allows you to send your video directly to people via email
Social - this allows you to share the video through various social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter
Embed - this provides you with the embed coding to put your video into a website. There is also the option to create a moving GIF image of the video which can be a great resource if you wanted to show a learner a quick bit of help
Copy Link - this is the standard way of sharing your video as it gives you a link for the learner to click on and get to the video - link can be put into Google Classrooms to be viewed
You are able to change the Privacy Settings of the video depending on who you want to view the video.
