Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences. Students:
a. Articulate and set personal learning goals, develop strategies leveraging technology to achieve them and reflect on the learning process itself to improve learning outcomes.
b. Build networks and customize their learning environments in ways that support the learning process.
c. Use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.
d. Understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations, demonstrate the ability to choose, use and troubleshoot current technologies and are able to transfer their knowledge to explore emerging technologies.
I believe I met this standard of being an Empowered Learner because I created something with a technology I wasn't familiar with and shared an originally written poem with the digital world. Since publishing my work, I've received a good amount of feedback - positive feedback, more specifically. Because the technology I used (Storybird) was unfamiliar to me, I had to take several days to learn more about it before creating my work and figure out if this was a technology I'd use in the future. I reflected on my learning process while using this technology, built an online network, sought feedback from other writers, and overall demonstrated the ability to choose an appropriate platform, use it, and transferred my knowledge to the classroom setting.
I would use this grab bag tool to let students show their creative side by writing their own piece and publishing it online. I would use this tool to let me see students' work and assess them in a different way than usual.
