Modern Languages and Culture
In general, 3 credit classes equal 0.5 blocks of time in the timetable and 5 credit classes equal 1.0 blocks of time in the timetable. Grade 10 and 11 students are expected to have a full timetable (no spares), 8.0 blocks.

As the world becomes ever smaller and as markets become more global, second languages will continue to be valuable skills – in government, trade, services, travel, education, or for enjoyment and a sense of accomplishment. There is no end to the use and value of another language!

Overall Goals:
To understand and express oneself in basic situations using the 4 skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
To develop skills and strategies used to learn other languages.
To be knowledgeable and aware of history and culture and the roles they play in language and communication.
To support a desire to learn more through further reading and study, travel, and exchanges.
French 10 3Y: 5 credits [1.0 blocks]
Develops very basic communication including introductions of self, friends and family, description of activities and weather, and an exploration of Canada, specifically Alberta and Quebec. Grammar will be in the present and near future tenses. [Sample Course Outline]
French 20 3Y: 5 credits [1.0 blocks]
Builds on learning from French 10 with communication and grammar becoming more complex. Grammar will include use of past tenses and object pronouns. Areas of communication will include shopping for both clothes and food, description of personal trips and activities, and the history and sites of Paris, France.
French 30 3Y: 5 credits [1.0 blocks]
Using stories, movies, music, role plays and your own personal experiences we will continue to develop language skills through a wide variety of activities. French 30 3Y can often be used for University or College entrance and there is NO Diploma exam for this 30 level course.
Spanish Language and Culture 10: 5 credits [1.0 blocks]
In this introductory course, students will gain an appreciation of the rich Spanish culture while learning to speak and understand this widely spoken language. This is a task-based course involving the learning of grammar, vocabulary and communication skills which lead to a command of basic spoken Spanish. [Sample Course Outline]
