Film Studies

In general, 3 credit classes equal 0.5 blocks of time in the timetable and 5 credit classes equal 1.0 blocks of time in the timetable.  Grade 10 and 11 students are expected to have a full timetable (no spares), 8.0 blocks.

FABRICATION STUDIES (Welding)

The Fabrication studies course is designed to expose students to fabrication and welding processes and provide the opportunity to build skills in working with metals. Course content has been developed by using first year welding apprenticeship modules with knowledge and skills linked directly to the Alberta Education fabrication curriculum. As a skill-based course, all students will be required to finish the 10 level assigned modules before moving on to the 20 level course, and 20 level modules must be completed before moving on to the 30 level course. This course is designed to support students who are interested in welding/fabrication as a possible career path, and also to support those students who are taking the course for personal interest.

Fabrication 10: 3 - 4 credits [0.5 blocks]

The basic introduction to general shop safety, tool identification, GMAW (MIG), and SMAW (Stick) welding.  Students will learn safe and controlled use of the two listed welding processes and hone their skills as they complete 3 welded projects.  An additional opportunity to create a personal project for more credits is available time permitting.

Fabrication 20: 5 - 10 credits [1.0 blocks] 

Prerequisite: Fabrication 10

This course takes student interest from Fab 10 and steps up the challenge.  Students will be working with GMAW, SMAW, and FCAW welding processes as they complete welds in 4 positions in both fillet and groove joints.  Additional skills used will be safe operation and understanding of plasma cutting equipment, and development of personal projects from start to finish.  Students also have the option of building customer projects for skill and credit acquisition.  

Fabrication 30: 5 - 10 credits [1.0 blocks]

Prerequisite: Fabrication 20

This course is designed to further enhance the skills learned in Fab 20.  Students will be pushed as they focus on groove welds using GMAW, SMAW, and FCAW in 4 weld positions.  Project design, development, and budgeting are key focuses as the complexity of projects increases.  Students also have the option of building customer projects for skill and credit acquisition.  Fabrication 30 is very student interest guided as they explore opportunities available to them. 

FASHION STUDIES

Fashion Studies offers students the opportunity to increase their knowledge and skills in the design and construction of projects. Students do not need any prior sewing experience. If you are interested in design, fashion, quilting and costuming, these creative modules are for you. The Fashion Studies courses at all levels emphasize sewing, construction and project work. Students with career interests in starting a sewing or fashion business, fashion or interior design, event planning or other creative pursuits will enjoy these courses.

Fashion 10: 3 credits [0.5 blocks]

The Basics start here! Students will create different projects that will help them build their confidence and skills in sewing. Projects may include a 9-square pillow cover, pajama pants, a hoodie, etc. [Sample Course Outline]

Fashion 20: 5 - 8 credits [1.0 blocks]

Prerequisite: Fashion 10

Courses in digital embroidery, active wear, and fashion sewing may be examined. Learning to work with specialty fabrics, creating home décor and quilting are also topics that will be explored.

Fashion 30: 5 - 8 credits [1.0 blocks]

Prerequisite: Fashion 20

Students sewing and creative skills will be challenged by courses in advanced construction, specialty fabrics, textile arts and wearable art, retailing and costuming.

FIBRE ARTS

Fibre Arts 10: 3 credits [0.5 blocks]

Fibre Arts 10 allows students to increase their knowledge and skills in the history, design and construction of fibre-based projects. Students do not need any prior experience. The modules studied are Textile Arts 1, Textile Arts 2 and Project A.  

Skills taught in the first two modules of Fibre Arts 10 may include slow stitching, knitting, crochet, macramé, embroidery, plastic canvas, spinning, cross stitching, and needle felting. The final module is project-based, using a fibre art technique of the students' choice. [Sample Course Outline]   Course fee according to the fees schedule.

Fibre Arts 20: 3 credits [0.5 blocks]

Fibre Art 20 allows students to further their skills by completing the following modules:  Surface Embellishment, Wearable Art and Textile Arts 3.  They will be given opportunities to learn new techniques and skills and will create a business plan for creating and selling a project of their choice that draws upon the skills learned.  If students complete all 3 modules, there are others that they can complete to enhance their learning.

Film Studies 15 - 5 credits [1.0 blocks]

(Grades 10 -12)

Film Studies 15 allows students the opportunity to explore and understand the use and impact of film media in modern society through social, cultural and historical factors. Students will use film as a means of constructing knowledge, understanding multiple perspectives, and communicating ideas through the creation of original work. Students will explore and assess the literary, dramatic and cinematic aspects of film and other visual media.  This course will require the rigorous intellectual, technical and artistic engagement of students through the creation of visual and media based projects.
