In general, 3 credit classes equal 0.5 blocks of time in the timetable and 5 credit classes equal 1.0 blocks of time in the timetable.  Grade 10 and 11 students are expected to have a full timetable (no spares), 8.0 blocks.

CAKE DECORATING

Cake Decorating 15: 3 credits [0.5 blocks]

An Introductory Course to the Basic Principles of Cake Decorating - 3 credits

Students will start by learning the basics of cake decorating through buttercream and royal icing. They will practice basic concepts and tip movements, then progressively move into more complicated skills. Later, they will design their own one-tiered cake made of fondant. [Sample Course Outline]

Cake Decorating 25: The Art and Science of Baking Principles: 5 credits [1.0 blocks]

Prerequisite: Food Basics 1010, Cake Decorating 15

Students will have the opportunity to can and freeze a variety of fruit and vegetables and learn how to make and manipulate products to add flavors to their cakes. Working collaboratively, students will learn entrepreneurial skills through the planning and creation of a food venture project. Students will then research, create and present different types of cakes, icings and fillings to other students in their class then research, design and build a structure that will support a 4-tiered fondant cake. Students will then learn how to work with fondant, gum paste, pulled sugar and rice crispy treats to develop multiple figurines and bring their cake designs to life!

CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGIES

Construction Technologies provides you with the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge related to introductory woodworking, cabinets, furniture or building systems. The modules can be taken as a foundation for apprenticeship or simply for enjoyment!

Construction 10: 3 - 4 credits [0.5 blocks]

Attitude is more important than skill in this class. We will have fun together, whether building a dog house, coffee table, or simply assembling an item from a box store...it all begins with the right plan, attitude and tools. You will learn how to use tools and skills in a safe manner and build a very cool folding beach chair as a bonus! Most of all, you will gain confidence that YOU CAN DO IT! This course is needed to move on to Construction 20 and 30.  [Sample Course Outline]

Construction 20 - 5 - 10 credits [1.0 block]

Prerequisite: Construction 10

Construction 20 builds on the skills you have learned in Construction 10. This course introduces students to the fundamentals of building, and furniture construction. You will learn how to plan a project from start to finish, big or small. Whether you are interested in building decks, sheds, and structures, or want to create a piece of furniture that will last a lifetime, this course has it all. Come ready to work hard, and have fun! 

Construction 30 - 5 - 7 credits [1.0 block]

Prerequisite: Construction 20

With all the skills gained from construction 10 and 20, this course focuses on project planning and construction. Options range from advanced construction techniques to furniture building. There is an opportunity for students to earn two project credits. Students wanting to earn 5 credits at the 30 level should be self-motivated.

COSMETOLOGY

Cosmetology and Esthetics Programs delve into the world of haircare, skincare, fashion and current trends. Students actively participate in learning how to style, color, cut, create and design hair and skincare fashions or trends that are sellable commodities to the public. Students learn under the guidance of a journeyman certified teacher and esthetician. They learn business, retail, and salon operation skills, as well as gaining trade skills to effectively build personal, professional, and transferable skills. These skills become the foundation for their apprenticeships and future careers. In both programs students examine and fully engage in the industry standards, current trends while cultivating skills necessary to have a fantastic start in the world of employment in Cosmetology and Esthetics. Whether the student is contemplating a career in this industry or is just curious, this program has those life skills and employability skills which can be generalized to any field or application in life.

Cosmetology 10: 3 - 5 credits [0.5 blocks]

Let’s have some fun! Let’s learn about the hair industry while learning some practical skills for hair care, hair design, and current trends. This fun interactive course assists the student in determining if the hair, skin and beauty industry is a goal or just an interest. Students develop a proactive, positive self-image in this course as they assume various complex roles and responsibilities related to this trade. It is a hands-on and practical course, providing employability skills to all. [Sample Course Outline]

Cosmetology 20: 5 - 10 credits [1.0 or 2.0 blocks]

Prerequisite: Cosmetology 10

So you like hair, and fashion do you?! This will be the course for you to be able to continue your adventure into hair care! Students are able to explore the beauty industry through their studies in order to advance their skills in an exciting environment. They are challenged to demonstrate their skills in hair cutting, styling, chemical texturizing, coloring and client services classes. 

Cosmetology 30: 5 - 10 credits

Prerequisite: Cosmetology 20

You’ve come a long way baby!! In this program we strive to have the students continue working on their creative abilities by challenging them with advanced techniques in: design, hair colour, colour removal, lightening techniques, advanced cutting techniques and implements, advanced chemical texturizing techniques (design wraps), hair goods and extensions, professional ethics, men’s barbering, salon and business management and customer relations. 

Esthetics 20/30: 5 - 7credits [1.0 blocks]

Prerequisite: Cosmetology 10, Personal & Professional Images EST 1020 Skin Care Practices

Let's’ make the world beautiful! This is the only class in which the student is encouraged to do so well that their partner falls asleep! Students develop skills in the areas of facials, make-up, manicures, hair removal and various other aspects of aesthetics.  Creativity and design are fun fundamentals to build on in this engaging class. This course is a wonderful starting point to allow the students to build skills that can be used in post-secondary courses and be the rock star in the school.


These courses are designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the cosmetology industry, including theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Students will learn about the latest trends, techniques, and products in the field of cosmetology, preparing them for a career in various beauty-related professions.
