DESIGN STUDIES
Designers analyze society’s needs and create solutions that shape how our world looks and functions. At the core of Design Studies is the creation of each aspect and the process of constructing the world in which we live. Regardless of whether a student is interested in engineering, architecture, graphic or clothing design, the design process works in the same way.
Design Studies 10: 3-5 credits [0.5 blocks]
Students develop an understanding of design problems through research and practical applications. Students are introduced to computer aided design as well as basic modelling principles. [Sample Course Outline]
Design Studies 20: 5-10 credits [1.0 blocks]
Students continue their journey through the world of design. Areas covered include 2D and 3D renderings through sketching and computer assisted design (CAD) as well as technical drafting and the evolution of design. Students begin to manage their projects in terms of time and resources, look at the appropriate ways to present their solutions and get an introduction to our 3D printing software.
Design Studies 30: 5-10 credits [1.0 blocks]
In Advanced Design Studies, students continue their work in 2D and 3D Design. At this level, students can also choose to specialize their projects for architectural, engineering, industrial, landscape or interior design fields. Students explore where they think the future of design and the advancement of design technologies may go. Students in advanced design continue to work with physical modeling, including our 3D printers.
DIGITAL MEDIA & MARKETING
We live in a digital world. As students move out into the world beyond high school they will require digital skills no matter the field they go into. Digital Media & Marketing focuses on the creative aspects of exploring new media and other emerging technologies. Students will acquire skills that are transferable beyond the classroom and develop an understanding of responsible practices related to the creative process. These courses will also explore the inner workings of artificial intelligence, and its transformative influence on our ever-evolving world.
Digital Media & Marketing 10: 3-5 credits [0.5 blocks]
Students learn to employ fundamental elements and principles of design for various media and gain a strong foundational multidisciplinary experience in preparation for a digital media or BIT (Business, Administration, Finance & Information Technology) focus. Students learn the basics of marketing while laying the foundation of the focus of their choosing:
Advertising
Audio Video
Client Relations
Finance
Graphic Tools
5 new focuses in 20

Digital Media & Marketing 30: 5-10 credits [1.0 blocks]
Advanced Digital Media & Marketing 30 is a customizable course that allows students to develop their skills and creativity to set their path to be successful after high school. Students look at advanced techniques in their focuses or expand their knowledge and skill by dabbling in the other focuses. Students may also develop portfolios or reels which they may require for entrance to post secondary programs.
ELECTRO-TECHNOLOGIES (ELT) and ROBOTICS
The areas of electronics and Robotics are fascinating, and offer many opportunities for the future. In these courses you will have the opportunity to learn about electronic principles, safety, soldering, wiring, energy generation and conver-sion and an introduction to robots. These courses offer opportunities to build simple circuits and interact with a Robot. The ELT and Robotics class will be run as an independent study lunch hour or afterschool program with our United Robotics of Lacombe (URL) Club. The class will include partnerships with post secondary schools and participation in SKILLS ALBERTA, MINDFUEL and FIRST robotics competitions. There is a $50 course materials cost and $100 registration fee for students that join the competitions.
Electro-Technologies (ELT) 10: 3+ credits [0.5 block time at lunch or after school]
ELT 10 is an independent study lunch hour or afterschool course. Students will have the opportunity to earn credits in ELT1010-Electro-Assembly, ELT 1030-Conversion & Distribution, ELT 1130-Robotics 1, ELT 1140 Robotic Applications, CSE 1240 Robotic Programing, CSE 1110-Structured Programing 1 and any other related CTS course. [Sample Course Outline]
Robotics 10/20/30: 3-30 credits [1.0 blocks]
ROBOTICS 10/20/30 is an afterschool program for students that want to take hands-on, real world Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programming. Students will have opportunities to earn 3 to 10 credits per year in electro-technologies (ELT), Computer science programming (CSE), human and social services leadership & mentorship (HSS) , entrepreneurship and design (DES) and project credits based on available competitions. These courses will be offered after school hours in conjunction with the United Robotics of Lacombe (URL) Club.
