Social Studies Programming [Program Video]


Social Studies 10-1: 5 credits [1.0 blocks]  

Social Studies 10-1 is designed for students who have generally had success in junior high Social Studies (especially at the Grade 9 level). The course is taught using the Social 10-1 curriculum. The course explores multiple perspectives on the origins of globalization and the local, national and international impacts of globalization on identity, lands, cultures, economies, human rights and quality of life.  [Sample Course Outline]

Social Studies 10-2: 5 credits [1.0 blocks]

LCHS Recommendation: Below 60% in Social Studies 9  

Social Studies 10-2 is designed for students who have generally struggled with the key skills and knowledge in junior high Social. The course is taught using the Social 10-2 curriculum. The course explores the personal impact of the origins of globalization and the local, national and international impacts of globalization on identity, lands, cultures, economies, human rights and quality of life.

Social Studies 20-2: 5 credits [1.0 blocks]

Prerequisite: Social Studies 10

Students will develop an understanding of nationalism from Canadian, international and global perspectives, including the study of nationalism and its influence on regional, international and global relations.

Social Studies 20-1: 5 credits [1.0 blocks]

LCHS Recommendation: 65% in Social Studies 10 or Social Studies 20-2

Students will explore perspectives of nationalism from Canadian, international and global perspectives, including the study of nationalism and its influence on regional, international and global relations.

Social Studies 30-2: 5 credits [1.0 blocks]

Prerequisite: A minimum of 50% in Social Studies 20-2

Students will explore perspectives of ideology from Canadian, international and global perspectives, including the origins of liberalism and competing ideologies and their influence on regional, international and global relations. 

Fast-Tracked Social Studies 30-2: 5 credits [.5 blocks]

Prerequisite: A minimum of 50% in Social Studies 20-2

Students who are interested in speeding up the completion of Social Studies 30-2 can register for the Fast Tracked version of the course. The course will be taught in a normal single block, but will take only a quarter to finish rather than a semester (September to November, November to January, February to April, or April to June). It is the same content as a regular Social 30-2 class, but taught in an accelerated, but straightforward manner for motivated students. Students would need to be able to complete all required coursework before being able to write the diploma exam.  (This course will only run if there are enough interested students) 

Social Studies 30-1: 5 credits [1.0 blocks]

LCHS Recommendation: 65% in Social Studies 20-1 or Social Studies 30-2

Students will develop an understanding of ideology from Canadian, international and global perspectives, including the origins of liberalism and competing ideologies and their influence on regional, international and global relations.

University Prep Social Studies 30-1: 5 credits [1.0 blocks]

LCHS Recommendation: 65% in Social Studies 20-1 or Social Studies 30-2

Students who are interested in taking Social Studies 30-1 in a setting that more closely resembles a university classroom can register for the University Prep version of the course. The course will be designed based on the number of interested students, but would likely take the form of a large class size with designated lecture, tutorial, seminar, and office hour times. It is the same curriculum as a regular Social Social 30-1 class, but taught with an expectation of students taking almost complete ownership of their learning similar to a university setting. (This course will only run if there are enough interested students)
