All aboard! 8 very lucky children got to check out the incredible super yacht Destination on Thursday 27 Feb. Renee and Mike (parents at our school) welcomed us onboard the enormous yacht (41m long!) and gave us an incredible tour of all the areas above and below deck.
The computer systems were amazing- there was a button for everything imaginable! One of the screens shared photos of the yacht on some of its incredible journeys around the world including a once in a lifetime trip to Antarctica and a photo from the middle of a huge storm with waves washing right over the boat.
We went below deck to explore some of the living areas and bedrooms. There were guest suites and bathrooms that were were so shiny and luxurious! The children marvelled at all of the clever storage spaces hidden around the rooms- everything had a purpose!
We saw the bunk rooms for the crew and the ladder used by the crew to get up on deck without having to walk through the main areas of the boat. The galley (kitchen) area was very cool. It even had a full laundry in one corner and a space for a new fridge used just to keep flowers fresh for longer while at sea!
The crew need to be ready for anything! Guests can request any kind of food at any time of day and the crew needs to prepare it! They need to carry a lot of different food options with them, so there were huge fridges, under floor freezer spaces and hatches that opened down to dry food storage spaces.
We went even deeper down in the boat to see the engine room. The engine was enormous very complex. There was an engineer on crew whose job it was to make sure that everything worked correctly throughout the journey. There was also a water maker that took the salt out of sea water and made it drinkable. This is very useful when you are out at sea for long periods of time!
From the bottom of the yacht we headed up the crew ladder to the deck. There were so many hatches hiding winches for the enormous sails and two hiding HUGE anchors that were motorised as they were far too heavy to be lifted any other way. The mast was so tall we almost fell over backwards trying to look up at the top. It has a chair that the crew sit in and pull themselves up on to be able to check that the rigging is working correctly. You have to be good with heights to do this job! There are also 2 cameras on the mast and many lights so the mast can be seen even at night time!
What an incredible experience we had aboard Destination! Thank you so much Renee and Mike for showing us what life is like onboard a super yacht! Thank you also for our cool hats!
