Two Spoons Group 1

How exciting, our first venture into the world of cooking and business! Off we went to visit Two Spoons Cafe.

It was great to meet Mr and Mrs Spoons. To start with we had a safety chat and Mr Spoons talked through his Food Control Manual. We know you need to be super clean , and super careful in a kitchen.

At front of house we put on our smiles and for many of us we made our own first hot chocolate on a commercial coffee maker! We learnt about the point of difference that is important to being a successful business. Thinking about your point of difference is important and believing in yourself and your product are really important too because your customers will value that. Thinking about how you want your customers to be served is also important because there are different approaches for this. At Two Spoons you have a counter experience, so the staff can concentrate on making coffees and sorting out the food.

We also learnt that Two Spoons make their own food to look after people with allergies and make sure ingredients are healthy whereas some cafes buy their food. Isn’t there are lot to think about when you run a business! On top of all those ideas you have to sort out , you also need to make a profit which Mr Spoons explained to us how he works it out. Maths is everywhere and definitely in a cafe !!!

We also learnt that you can make a difference by supporting each other, recycling , reusing and being responsible with your waste. Did you know that your food scraps can be turned into soil for your garden? Mr and Mrs Spoons use Bokashi bins. The food gets mixed with pellets to pickle the waste and break it down into soil for your garden. Maybe we could try this at school too?

Mr and Mrs Spoons have values that they use at the cafe just like we use our ORCA Values. They use Consistency, Efficiency and Communication.

We had a very interesting time in the kitchen too, using kitchen equipment. Did you know if you use a sharp knife to cut an onion it won’t make you cry!

The cafe was very busy and while we were there Mr Spoons needed to make a salad because it was running out , so customers in the cafe got to eat a Caesar salad that we helped to make !

Thank you Mr and Mrs Spoons for helping make our dream come true !
