Drama Class Experience

Year 9 drama class at Whangaparaoa School was the destination for 5 of our brave young thespians. Nerves were quickly overcome with some warm-up games where the year 9's made our year 3-6 kids feel right at home and confident to participate. The warms-up had the children responding to scenarios by creating a freeze-frame picture where one member of the group has to stand, sit and lie down while creating a realistic role for themselves in the context of the story. The children were VERY creative and a lot of laughter was generated viewing each group's creative interpretation of the storyline.

We moved over to the auditorium to work on the stage for the second part of the session. The children learned the different areas of the stage through a fun games similar to the old Captain's Coming game of many of our childhoods. The children raced between upstage, downstage, stage left and right and acted out tragedy through dramatic deaths, comedy through hilarious proposals and rehearsal groups based on the number of people called out. The WGP primary kids were so well taken care of by their new college friends, who ensured most of our kids made it through to the final round without being eliminated!

Next, the children broke into small groups and were given a secret picture prompt. They were given 10 minutes to create a skit based around the photo prompt that ended in a freeze frame that matched their photo. Our kids were incredibly brave and totally stole the show when it was their turn to perform.

By the time the session was over, the primary kids has made some wonderful new college friends and had the time of their lives! Well done to our young actors for being brave and doing a wonderful job being high school drama students for a class!

Thank you to Emma and her Year 9 Drama class for a wonderful experience!
