5 of our students were lucky enough to work with Pete Wilson who owns an electrical solutions company. Pete taught the group all about how circuits work and how to use circuits to conduct electricity and act upon a load (like a light, spinner, radio and alarm.
After some theory work, Pete gifted each child their own Brain Box kit with all the parts needed to create their own circuits, complete with alarms, lights, speakers and spinner.
The children were so interested that they jumped right in and, with Pete's help mastered the basics of their kits quickly. Pete helped to challenge their thinking to take on some more complicated circuits, setting off alarms when the door opened and closed and combining kits to cause more dramatic results!
On day two, Pete brought along a range of equipment he uses in his job, explaining what each item was for and how it worked. The children then had some exploration time based on their interests. There was some soldering going on, measuring electrical currents using an ammeter and controlled explosions to demonstrate what happens with the current is too strong!
The children were so engaged and excited by their work with Pete that they did not want to leave! Thanks Pete for a truely electrifying experience!
