Putting Together Effective News Stories
Purpose: Each group will create a story covering a topic related to the high school "happenings".
Story ideas can be anything from the cafeteria lunch program to student parking problems. You will be using all of the concepts you have learned to this point. The focus of this assignment will be to utilize interviewing techniques to put together an effective story which will include an introduction, story, and closing.
Requirements:
The length of your story will be no less than 1 minute, no more than 3.
Each story will contain at least two different interviews.
The story will have "many" cover shots to fill the story to keep viewers interested.
Each story will have one reporter.
Each story will have the reporter doing a "stand up" in the middle or end of the story.
Steps to Complete
Choose a topic
Research the story.
Determine who would be a good interview to give "credibility" to the story
Generate questions for the interview. Questions should be open-ended (more than yes/no answers)
Schedule appointments for interviews
Storyboard - A shot list including interviews and cover shots (B-roll).
Tape cover shots while waiting for interviews/tape the interviews
Preferable to Tape the stand-up at the time of the event or taping of the cover shots (include a closing or connecting statement)
Write the voiceover
Lead (or write) into your sound bites using information from what the subject says (w/o repeating)
Record the voiceover
Tape the stand-up (include a closing or connecting statement)
Capture all audio and video
Lay down the audio FIRST, this includes all sound bites
Match cover shots up to the audio
