Mini Storage Box
Making the Mini Storage Box
Students are given a ⅛” x 15 ¾” x 11 ¾” piece of wood to create a business card holder using only a laser engraver as the cutting tool. Students will choose a purpose for their box (jewelry, golf ball, pins)
Constraints:
Students will get only one piece of ⅛” x 15 ¾” x 11 ¾ wood to create only ONE prototype then a ONE final design. Design can be prototyped using cardboard as many times as needed.
Report Packet to Include:
1. Identify the Problem - Students should state the challenge problem in their own words.
Define your problem statement
How can I design a __________ that will __________?
Identify Criteria and Constraints - Students should specify the design requirements (include the criteria listed above and more)
2. Brainstorm Solutions / Research
Student will sketch a couple ideas to solve the problem. Students should clearly identify knowledge of design criteria.
3. Develop Solutions - Students should record pros and cons.
Select an Approach - Students will identify the design that appears to solve the problem the best. Students will write a statement that describes why they chose the design. This should include some reference to the criteria and constraints identified above.
Create Detailed Drawings - Students should create new drawings that are orthographic projections (multiple views showing the top, front and one side) and isometric drawings (three-dimensional depiction). These are to be drawn in SolidWorks and working drawings created.
4. Build a Model or Prototype - Students will construct model in CAD and will use the laser engraver to build the prototype.
5. Test/Evaluate - Students will examine and evaluate their prototypes or designs based on the criteria and constraints. Students will enlist students other students to review the solution and help identify changes that need to be made. Based on criteria and constraints, students must identify any problems and proposed solutions.
Communicate - Students will share results with the teacher based on test/evaluation. And record their successes/failures. Student will include sketches or photos of the product. Students will write a report based on the steps in the Engineering Design Process.
