This course is intended for any student with an interest in domestic architecture. It is suitable for those with interests in the construction trades, computer graphics and design, home repairs, maintenance, and engineering.
This course provides an overview of the design and creation of residential buildings, and an introduction to friendly, yet powerful three-dimensional architectural design software. Students will create floor plans, plot plans, and animated “walk-throughs” of their designs. They will explore concepts of aesthetics, accepted design practices construction, regulations, sustainability, and the “green” movement of energy efficiency and environmental considerations.

- Identify careers in architecture and fields of construction.
- Forecast trends in architecture and construction in relation to design and material.
- Discuss any positive or negative feedback in using recycled materials.
- Discuss historical influences on architectural designs.
- Research and present information on Green Building in accordance to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Green House Building Guidelines. (LEED)
- Present information from text and research in a clear, concise and appropriate manner.
- Identify basic house designs.
- Break a house up and discuss the function of a house.
- Sleeping area, living area, service area
- Discuss primary considerations involved when building a house or moving into an existing neighborhood.
- Discuss and identify items included on different plans including, floor plan, foundation/basement plan, electrical plan, plot plan and elevation drawings.
- Identify and discuss materials used in house construction.
- Identify required interior systems of buildings or other structures.
- heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting, structural and plumbing systems
- Identify CT building codes.
- Identify International Residential Codes
- Define scales used in architectural drawings.
- Sketch several individual residential designs

- Using Chief Architect, an architectural drafting software, build their designs 3-dimensional designs on the computer.
- Create a functional kitchen design

- Apply organizational skills to classroom and computer activities.

Assessment
- Each student will complete a refined sketch of a design of a residential structure using graph paper.
- Students will have book work and chapter reviews.
- Each Student will create their designs on the computer using the Chief Architect software.
- Projects/Test/Quizzes/Professionalism will be used to evaluate students.
