Design a single family home with three bedrooms not to exceed 2,000 sq. ft. of floor space measured to the outside face of exterior walls.
The residence may be with or without basement, must have a garage (basement type or attached—may be of masonry or frame construction–carports will not count as a garage).
Garages, open porches, decks, unfinished incidental storage, greenhouses, and/or seasonal solar spaces, unfinished basements and attic areas will not be counted as finished living area.
Two story spaces shall be counted as one area at the floor level.
The site is a residential building lot with 100’ of frontage and 140’ of depth (site may incorporate varying topography and characteristics for additional points).
Green Building: The entries should include three NAHB’s Model Green Home Building Guidelines concepts and the reason utilized on the enclosed form provided by Home Builders Association of Hartford County. For NAHB’s guidelines go to: www.nahbgreen.org/Guidelines
RULES AND REGULATIONS Entries may be rejected unless they meet the following criteria: The drawing must be black ink/pencil on white paper. They must be essentially flat, meaning raised letter or other three–dimensional surfaces are not permitted. The drawing sheet size shall be 24” wide x 30” deep in portrait format and shall be mounted on heavy card-board or illustration board 24” wide x 30” deep.**Entries not meeting size requirements may be disqualified.
The sheet shall include the following:
Plot plan in 1” = 20’ scale, showing all exterior building dimensions and all setbacks from lot lines. Assume 35’front & rear building lines with 10’ side yard.
A floor plan in 1/4” scale in presentation drawing style including room title and sizes with adequate overalldimensions so judges can calculate footage.
A typical wall section noting materials to be used including “R” value of exterior and roof construction.
A perspective or front elevation drawing of the building, additional details, plans, or elevations as deemed advisable by the student to explain his entry.
Drawings must indicate square footage of residence (see “Design Criteria” below).
Drawings must include title block and must include instructor’s signature.
All drawings for one entry shall be on one board of the size specified above.
Each entry should include a full–dimensional scale model 1/4” scale of the house design.
The model is to be constructed of suitable material of the student’s choice on a rigid base (1/2” plywood or equivalent) 24” wide x 30” deep in portrait format.
Other Design Options
Accessibility: Students may incorporate 3 accessibility features as described in the Dept. of Justice, ADA Standards for Accessible Design. For ADA Standards for Accessible Design go to: www.ada.gov Click on ADA Design Standards
Energy Efficiency: Students may incorporate energy efficiency features in the design of the home (heating/cooling, windows, doors, etc.). Students should provide specific details in section (c) of the Rules and Regulations. Students may also include a listing of Energy Star products and components, but must describe each component and its application.

All completed entries from each school are to be submitted for official judging. Awards will be as follows:
FIRST PLACE AWARD: $1,000 Cash Prize will be awarded to the winner and a $1,500 scholarship shall be presented upon evidence of matriculation in one of the programs listed below: Architecture; Construction Management; Construction Technology, Structural Engineering; Civil Engineering
SECOND PRIZE AWARD: $600 Cash Prize and a $750 scholarship with the same criteria as above.
THIRD PLACE AWARD: $300 Cash Prize
FOURTH PLACE AWARD: $100 Cash Prize
Scholarships shall be presented upon graduation from high school and is to be used within two (2) years of that time.
The school of the student winning first place shall receive a plaque on which will be designated the name of the school, the teacher and the student.
Additional awards may be given for Areas of Excellence. In the past these categories included at the judges discretion: Green Building; Energy Efficiency; Accessibility; Structural Detail; Thinking Outside the Box; Unique Model Presentation; Best First Time Entry for a School. Each award is $500 and will be given to the student’s school to enhance the department curriculum.

Originality of ideas in plan and elevations
Logical use of materials on construction of model
Conformance with principles of good architectural design
Quality of model presentation and draftsmanship
Accuracy of construction details/wall section
In all cases, the decision of the judges will be final .
Non-adherence to rules and regulations will result in point deduction and/or disqualification

All entries submitted by entrants, as well as their accompanying scale models, will become the property of the Home Builders Association of Hartford County, Inc. for the duration of the Show. All drawings and models must be reclaimed at the Connecticut Convention Center after 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, Date TBD, or Monday, Date TBD, prior to noon. Thereafter, the HBA will no longer be responsible for the entry materials.
