When he was 32, he was the General of the Household who Assists Righteousness' envoy to Shu. [Sun] Quan told [Zhang] Wen, "It is unsuitable for you to go so far out, but I fear Zhuge Kongming does not know my reasons for communicating with the Cao clan, and so I hassle you to go. If the Shanyue are all eliminated, then soon I will want to make major developments with Shu. The righteousness of an envoy is in receiving their commands, but not receiving their rhetoric." [Zhang] Wen replied, "This servant, in entering, has no advice of a loyal heart, and in leaving, has no ability to reply diplomatically. I fear that I have none of Zhang Lao's accomplishments in extending reputation, and that I also have none of Zichan's effectiveness in explaining matters."
When [Zhang] Wen arrived in Shu, he went to its capital and presented this message: "Of old, when Gaozong [of Shang aka Yin] was in mourning, it prospered Yin's fortunes that it was reinvigorated; when the (Cheng) King [of Zhou] was a young child, the abundance of Zhou's virtue resulted in great peace. Such merits have covered all under Heaven and such reputations have continued on without end. Now Your Majesty, because of your clever and wise appearance, are in accordance to the past. All your officials are good assistants, the ranking of such all have glorious essences. Among those far and near that watch the wind, there is none that are not glad to rely on you. The Nation of Wu often believes we should together [join] forces so that we may inspect the riverside. We are willing to pacify the universe within together with your enlightened majesty, following our minds to plan together. There is our compliance to the Yellow River [Wei] since military affairs have risen up to bother us and our workers are few and lacking, therefore we must endure the shame of being lowly and unreasonable. We have sent this lowly servant, [Zhang] Wen, to talk about forming a friendship. Your Majesty is sincere and majestic in your etiquette, it is inconvenient for me to shame you so suddenly. I myself have entered a remote area, yet when I came to the suburbs, I have continually received respects befitting an envoy, your kind edict then adding to it. Such glory has made me awed. And so I respectfully petition this presented letter, which is sealed." Shu extremely valued his talent. [When Zhang Wen] returned, soon after, he was sent to enter Yuzhang's army and sent out troops. In that business, there was nothing remarkable.
