Xiahou Dun

Xiahou Dun, styled Yuanrang, was from Qiao, Pei Commandery, and was Xiahou Ying's descendant. When he was 14, he was under a teacher, and someone had insulted the teacher. [Xiahou] Dun killed him, and from this, his fierceness became known. When the Grand Progenitor began to raise [troops], [Xiahou] Dun accompanied him as an Assistant General, following in his expeditions. When the Grand Progenitor was made General who Projects Might, he made [Xiahou] Dun a Major, and had him garrison at Baima. He later relocated to be (zhechongxiaowei) and concurrently Grand Admistrator of Dong Commanery. When the Grand Progenitor launched an expedition against Tao Qian, he had [Xiahou] Dun guard Puyang.

When Zhang Miao rebelled in favor of Lü Bu, the Grand Progenitor's family was in Juancheng. [Xiahou] Dun rushed his army over there; along the way, they encountered [Lü] Bu and fought each other. [Lü] Bu withdrew and entered Puyang, seizing [Xiahou] Dun's army's supplies. They sent generals pretending to surrender; together, they captured [Xiahou] Dun, and demanded valuable objects. [Xiahou] Dun's army was shocked and fearful. [Xiahou] Dun's general, Han Hao, led the army to guard the gates of [Xiahou] Dun's camp. He summoned his officers and generals, and all [were told] to have their soldier remain in their sections and not to act. The camp then was settled. He thus went to [Xiahou] Dun's location, and scolded the hostage takers, saying, "You are all rebellious traitors, but to dare take hostage a great general, do you think you will live! Moreover, I have received orders to destroy traitors. Should I leave you be because of just one general?" He thence cried and said to [Xiahou] Dun, "What else can I do under the national law!" He quickly summoned his soldiers to attack the hostage takers. The hostage takers were fear-stricken and kowtowed, saying, "We just wanted to ask for money to use and leave, nothing more!" [Han] Hao rebuked them and all were beheaded. [Xiahou] Dun was then released. When the Grand Progenitor heard of this, he told [Han] Hao, "Sir, what you did should be a law for thousands of generations." He thus ordered that from here on, should there be future hostage takers, they would all be attacked, and not consider the hostage. Ever since, the [occurrence of] hostages were thus ended.[1]

〔一〕Sun Sheng states: I note that in the Annals of the Guangwu [Emperor], in the 9th year of the Jianwu era, bandits kidnapped Lady Yin's younger brother, and officials did not [account] the hostages as to punish the bandits. The bandits thus killed [the brother]. Such was a joint attack, an ancient system. From [Emperors] An, Shun, and since, the government was in decline, and hostages did not exclude princes and dukes. Among the officials, none could follow the national law, so when [Han] Hao previously beheaded [the hostage takers], this [gained] the Martial [Emperor] of Wu's praise.
