Jiang Wan - 蔣琬*

Jiang Wan, styled Gongyan, was from Xiangxiang, Lingling. When capped he and his younger cousin, Liu Min of Quanling, were both famous. [Jiang] Wan as a province secretary followed the Former Lord into Shu, becoming Chief of Guangdu. The Former Lord was once touring and stayed at Guangdu, where he saw that [Jiang] Wan ignored domestic affairs, and at the time was also very drunk, so the Former Lord was very furious and was about to convict and punish him, but the General of Military Advice; Zhuge Liang told him, "Jiang Wan is a pillar of the state and not a talent for hundreds of li. He in governance has the safety of the people as his foundation, not having embellishments* as priority. I hope Your Lordship will be thorough in investigating this." The Former Lord highly respected [Zhuge] Liang, thus he did not punish, but quickly removed him from office, that was all.

* embellishments (脩飾) - refers to petty government affairs.
