[Wang] Yun appointed [Lü] Bu as General who Inspires Might, tally to execute violators, to be treated as if he were an Excellency, and further enfeoffed as Marquis of Wen. Together, they managed the government. [Lü] Bu's killing of [Dong] Zhuo sparked fear in the people of Liang Province, and all hated him. Thus, Li Jue and others thus jointly attacked the city of Chang'an.[1] [Lü] Bu could not oppose them, and Jue and the others then entered Chang'an. Sixty days after [Dong] Zhuo's death, [Lü] Bu was again defeated.[2] He led hundreds of cavalry out of Wu Gate, intending to reach Yuan Shu. Because Bu killed Zhuo, he used this to repay Shu's hatred, and wanted to become friendly. [Yuan] Shu hated his duplicity, opposing him and refusing entry. [Lü Bu] went north to reach Yuan Shao, and [Yuan] Shao and [Lü] Bu together striked Zhang Yan at Changshan. The Yan elite soldiers were tens of thousands, and [Lü Bu's] cavalry thousand. [Lü] Bu had a fine horse called Red Hare.[3] They often rode with Cheng Lian and Wei Yue to charge into formations, and thus defeated the Yan army. To strengthen his troops, his generals looted, and [Yuan] Shao began to despise him. [Lü] Bu learned of his feelings and asked [Yuan] Shao to leave. [Yuan] Shao was afraid he would leave to harm him, and sent brave warriors overnight to ambush [Lü] Bu, without success. When the matter was exposed, [Lü] Bu fled to Henei, and joined Zhang Yang. [Yuan] Shao ordered troops to pursue him, but all feared [Lü] Bu, and there was none who dared approach.[4]
允以布為奮威將軍，假節，儀比三司，進封溫侯，共秉朝政。布自殺卓後，畏惡涼州人，涼州人皆怨。由是李傕等遂相結還攻長安城。〔一〕布不能拒，傕等遂入長安。卓死後六旬，布亦敗。〔二〕將數百騎出武關，欲詣袁術。布自以殺卓為術報讎，欲以德之。術惡其反覆，拒而不受。北詣袁紹，紹與布擊張燕於常山。燕精兵萬餘，騎數千。布有良馬曰赤兎，〔三〕常與其親近成廉、魏越等陷鋒突陣，遂破燕軍。而求益兵衆，將士鈔掠，紹患忌之。布覺其意，從紹求去。紹恐還為己害，遣壯士夜掩殺布，不獲。事露，布走河內，與張楊合。紹令衆追之，皆畏布，莫敢逼近者。〔四〕
〔一〕The Records of Famed Heroes states: Guo Si was north of the city. [Lü] Bu opened the city gates and led his troops towards [Guo] Si. He said, "Let us temporarily withdraw our troops. Only we shall determine the winner and loser." [Guo] Si and [Lü] Bu thus alone fought each other. [Lü] Bu had his spear pierce [Guo] Si, and Guo [Si's] rear cavalry thus advanced to rescue [Guo] Si. [Guo] Si and [Lü] Bu thus both ceased [to fight].

〔二〕Your servant, Songzhi, would propose that the Records of Famed Heroes states that in various writings, [Lü] Bu had killed [Dong] Zhuo on the 23rd day of the 4th month, and that he fled on the 1st day of the 6th month. At the time, there was also no leap month. It could not have been sixty days.

〔四〕The Records of Famed Heroes states: [Zhang] Yang and his subordinate generals all received [Li] Jue and [Guo] Si's bounty and together plotted against [Lü] Bu. When [Lü] Bu heard this, he said to [Zhang] Yang, "I am from our same province! If you kill me, you will become weak. Better to 'betray' me; you would get all of [Guo] Si and [Li] Jue's titles and favor." [Zhang] Yang thus on the outside agreed to [Guo] Si and [Li] Jue, but in the inside actually protected [Lü] Bu. [Guo] Si and [Li] Jue were worried from this, and hence issued a great fief edict, making [Lü] Bu the Grand Adminstrator of Yingchuan.
〔四〕《英雄記》曰：楊及部曲諸將皆受傕、汜購募，共圖布。布聞之，謂楊曰：「布，卿州里也。卿殺布，於卿弱。不如賣布，可極得汜、傕爵寵。」楊於是外許汜、傕，內實保護布。汜、傕患之，更下大封詔書，以布為頴川太守。
