Liu Fu, styled Yuanying, was from Xiang, Pei State. He escaped the chaos into Yang Province. In the beginning of the Jin'an era, he convinced Yuan Shu's generals, Qi Ji and Qin Yi, to have them lead their armies to join with the Grand Progenitor's. The Grand Progenitor was pleased by this, and had [Liu Fu] recruited as an assistant to the Excellency over the Masses.
劉馥字元穎，沛國相人也。避亂揚州，建安初，說袁術將戚寄、秦翊，使率衆與俱詣太祖。太祖恱之，司徒辟為掾。
Later, Sun Ce's installed Grand Administrator of Lujiang; Li Shu attacked and killed the Inspector of Yang Province; Yan Xiang. Mei Gan, Lei Xu, and Chen Lan of Lujiang amassed their armies of tens of thousands between the [Yangzi] and Huai Rivers; the commanderies and counties were ruined and destroyed. The Grand Progenitor at the time had the issue of Yuan Shao, but had [Liu] Fu be assigned with south-eastern matters, thus petitioning to have him become Inspector of Yang Province. When [Liu] Fu received orders, he travelled on a single horse to Hefei's empty cities, where he built the provincial center. He went south to appease [Lei] Xu and the others, and all of them became peaceful, devoting their services in succession. Within years, kindness and education were acted on greatly, and the common people liked such governance. The refugees that were afar in rivers and mountains that had returned were in the tens of thousands. From this, [Liu Fu] gathered scholars, established schools, spread the garrisoning of fields, and began to moderate the Quepi, Rubei, Qimen, and Wutang Dams so as to irrigate the rice paddies, and the officials and commoners had food reserves. He also made the city earth ramparts higher, had an excess of amassed wood and stone, weaved ten million mei of straw mats, and began to stockpile a thousand hu of fish oil for defense purposes. In the 13th year of the Jian'an era, he died.
後孫策所置廬江太守李述攻殺揚州刺史嚴象，廬江梅乾、雷緒、陳蘭等聚衆數萬在江、淮間，郡縣殘破。太祖方有袁紹之難，謂馥可任以東南之事，遂表為揚州刺史。馥旣受命，單馬造合肥空城，建立州治，南懷緒等，皆安集之，貢獻相繼。數年中恩化大行，百姓樂其政，流民越江山而歸者以萬數。於是聚諸生，立學校，廣屯田，興治芍陂及茹陂、七門、吳塘諸堨以溉稻田，官民有畜。又高為城壘，多積木石，編作草苫數千萬枚，益貯魚膏數千斛，為戰守備。建安十三年卒。
Sun Quan led 100,000 soldiers to besiege Hefei's city for over 100 days. At the time, the weather was one of continuous rain. The city was about to collapse, and therefore, the straw mats covered them, and at night, the [fish] oil illuminated the outside of the city. This showed the enemy that they had made preparations, and so the enemy routed and fled. The scholars of people of Yang Province increasingly missed [Liu Fu], and believed that although Dong Anyu's had defenses in Jinyang, it could not best [Liu Fu's]. His dams were so useful that they are used even today.
孫權率十萬衆攻圍合肥城百餘日，時天連雨，城欲崩，於是以苫蓑覆之，夜然脂照城外，視賊所作而為備，賊以破走。揚州士民益追思之，以為雖董安于之守晉陽，不能過也。及陂塘之利，至今為用。
[Liu] Fu's son was [Liu] Jing. During the Huangchu era, he shifted from (huangmenshilang) to Grand Administrator of Lujiang. The edict stated, "Your father served that province in the past, and now you shall also occupy this commandery. You were said to be capable for this burden." He was transferred to Henei, shifted to Secretariat, was gifted peerage of Marquis within the Passes. He left to become Intendant of Henan.
馥子靖，黃初中從黃門侍郎遷廬江太守，詔曰：「卿父昔為彼州，今卿復據此郡，可謂克負荷者也。」轉在河內，遷尚書，賜爵關內侯，出為河南尹。
The Regular Attendant who Scatters Cavalry; Ying Qu wrote a message to [Liu] Jing, which stated, "In entering, you act as Secretariat; in leaving, you overlook the capital region. You have the ability to enrich the people, like the sun leading the moon (in growing).
散騎常侍應璩書與靖曰：「入作納言，出臨京任。富民之術，日引月長。藩落高峻，絕穿窬之心。五種別出，遠水火之災。農器必具，無失時之闕。蠶麥有苫備之用，無雨濕之虞。封符指期，無流連之吏。鰥寡孤獨，蒙廩振之實。加之以明擿幽微，重之以秉憲不撓；有司供承王命，百里垂拱仰辨。雖昔趙、張、三王之治，未足以方也。」
[Liu] Jing's governance was like this. Previously, although it was cumbersome and demanding, eventually, the common people grew accustomed, (as it had the style of older customs). When his mother died, he left office, but later served as Minister of Finance and Minister of the Guards. He was further enfeoffed as Marquis of Guanglu District, the fief being 300 households.
靖為政類如此。初雖如碎密，終於百姓便之，有馥遺風。母喪去官，後為大司農衞尉，進封廣陸亭侯，邑三百戶。
He petitioned to explain the roots of Confucian education, stating, "Learning is what principles and laws are in stability or chaos, a great lesson from sages. Ever since the Huangchu era has come, we have gazed at the Imperial Academy for over twenty years. However, few have succeeded from it, probably because academians are nominated in a trivial manner, for its scholars are those that shirk from their duties, while their disciples come from noble clans. This is a disgraceful and incorrect order. This is not learning. Although there are famed [teachers], they are no people; although there is an established school, there are no good results. We should nominate academians with high standards, selecting those of model conduct and then appointing them as teachers, that they are in charge of young aristocrats. To follow ancient laws, we should have the descendants of [officials] over 2,000 shi when they become 15 to have them all enter the Imperial Academy. There should be clear regulations on expelling, promoting, honoring or shaming [students]. If there are those whose learning [of the Classics] are great and whose conduct is good, then we should promote them to raise virtue; if there are those that trivializes their studies and abandons their work, then we should remove them to punish wickedness. Let us nominate the virtuous, so that they can teach the weak to work hard. Regarding extravagant circles of friends, no need to prohibit them as they will cease on their own. Carry forth this great change in order to appease those that have not yet submitted [to Wei]. All six directions shall accept this teaching, that men from afar shall come. This lesson from the sages is the root of stable governance."
上疏陳儒訓之本曰：「夫學者，治亂之軌儀，聖人之大教也。自黃初以來，崇立太學二十餘年，而寡有成者，蓋由愽士選輕，諸生避役，高門子弟，恥非其倫，故無學者。雖有其名而無其人，雖設其教而無其功。宜高選愽士，取行為人表，經任人師者，掌教國子。依遵古法，使二千石以上子孫，年從十五，皆入太學。明制黜陟榮辱之路；其經明行脩者，則進之以崇德；荒教廢業者，則退之以懲惡；舉善而教不能則勸，浮華交游，不禁自息矣。闡弘大化，以綏未賔；六合承風，遠人來格。此聖人之教，致治之本也。」
He later was promoted to General who Garrisons the North, held an acting tally, and Commander of various military affairs in Hebei. [Liu] Jing believed that, "Of what is frequently followed for our grand strategy, there nothing better than border defense. We must have a distinction between the people and the barbarians." He thus opened up border defenses to garrison and seize strategic areas. He also expanded Liling Canal's great dams and irrigated water to Ji's north and south such that there were three rows of rice paddies. The frontier people benefitted from this.
後遷鎮北將軍，假節都督河北諸軍事。靖以為「經常之大法，莫善於守防，使民夷有別」。遂開拓邊守，屯據險要。又脩廣戾陵渠大堨，水溉灌薊南北；三更種稻，邊民利之。又脩廣戾陵渠大堨，水溉灌薊南北；三 更種稻，邊民利之。
In the 6th year of the Jiaping era, he died. He was posthumously promoted to General who Conquers the North and further enfeoffed as Marquis of Jiancheng Township. His posthumous title was the (Jing) Marquis. His son, [Liu] Xi, succeeded him.[1]

The (Jinyangqiu) states: Liu Hong, styled Shuhe, was [Liu] Xi's younger brother. [Liu Hong] and the (shi) Ancestor of Jin were of the same year

時帝在長安，命弘得選用宰守。徵士武陵伍朝高尚其事，牙門將皮初有勳江漢，弘上朝為零陵太守，初為襄陽太守。詔書以襄陽顯郡，初資名輕淺，以弘壻夏侯陟為襄陽。弘曰：「夫統天下者當與天下同心，治一國者當與一國推實。吾統荊州十郡，安得十女壻，然後為治哉！」乃表「陟姻親，舊制不得相監臨事，初勳宜見酬」。報聽之，衆益服其公當。
The Grand Administrator of Guanghan; Xin Ran believed the Son of Heaven to be covered in dust [from fleeing the capital], and that the four directions were in chaos, and so advanced a plan to gain power to [Liu] Hong. [Liu] Hong was furious and beheaded him. Of [Liu Hong's] contemporaries, there was none that did not praise him for being virtuous.
廣漢太守辛冉以天子蒙塵，四方雲擾，進從橫計於弘。弘怒斬之，時人莫不稱善。
The (Jìnzhūgōngzàn) states: At the time, though was the world was in chaos, Jing Province was safe and whole. [Liu] Hong had Liu Jingsheng's will to hold onto the Jianghan region. He did not associate himself with Elite Tutor; Sima Yue. [Sima] Yue was rather (accepting) of him. At the time, [Liu] Hong fell ill and died. His son, [Liu] Fan, served as General of the Household of the North.
《晉諸公贊》曰：於時天下雖亂，荊州安全。弘有劉景升保有江漢之志，不附太傅司馬越。越甚銜之。會弘病卒。子璠，北中郎將。
Sima Lang, styled Boda, was from Wen, Henei.
司馬朗字伯達，河內溫人也。〔一〕九歲，人有道其父字者，朗曰：「慢人親者，不敬其親者也。」客謝之。十二，試經為童子郎，監試者以其身體壯大，疑朗匿年，劾問。朗曰：「朗之內外，累世長大，朗雖穉弱，無仰高之風，損年以求早成，非志所為也。」監試者異之。後關東兵起，故兾州刺史李邵家居野王，近山險，欲徙居溫。朗謂邵曰：「脣齒之喻，豈唯虞、虢，溫與野王即是也；今去彼而居此，是為避朝亡之期耳。且君，國人之望也，今冦未至而先徙，帶山之縣必駭，是搖動民之心而開姦宄之原也，切為郡內憂之。」邵不從。邊山之民果亂，內徙，或為冦鈔。
〔一〕Sima Biao's Biographies in the Preface said: [Sima] Lang's grandfather was [Sima] Jun, styled Yuanyi, who extensively studied and enjoyed ancient [texts]. He was extraordinary in his magnanimity. He was eight chi tall and three cun, and his belt wrapped around ten times. His appearance was tall and burly, and with others, he was different. His fellow villagers and clansmen all admired him. His position reached Grand Adminstrator of Yingchuan.
〔一〕司馬彪《序傳》曰：朗祖父儁，字元異，博學好古，倜儻有大度。長八尺三寸，腰帶十圍，儀狀魁岸，與衆有異，鄉黨宗族咸景附焉。位至潁川太守。
His father was [Sima] Fang, styled Jiangong, whose nature was very direct but fair. Even if he attended a feast in his leisure, his solemnness never changed. He enjoyed the Book of Han's Biographies of Famed Ministers and was able to recite several tens of ten thousands words. When young, he served his province and commandery, later to serve as Prefect of Luoyang and Intendant of Jingzhao. Due to his elderly years, he transferred to become Commandant of Cavalry. He maintained his ambition in his humble house, so he closed his gates and was mindful of his behavior. His sons, despite being capped and mature, when not ordered to go forward, did not dare go forward; when not ordered to sit, did not dare sit; when not gestured to answer, did not dare speak. The solemnness between father and son was in this way. At the age of 71 in the 24th year of the Jian'an era, he died. He had eight sons. Lang was the most senior, while next was the (Xuan) August Emperor of the Jin.
父防，字建公，性質直公方，雖閑居宴處，威儀不忒。雅好《漢書名臣列傳》，所諷誦者數十萬言。少仕州郡，歷官洛陽令、京兆尹，以年老轉拜騎都尉。養志閭巷，闔門自守。諸子雖冠成人，不命曰進不敢進，不命曰坐不敢坐，不指有所問不敢言，父子之間肅如也。年七十一，建安二十四年終。有子八人，朗最長，次即晉宣皇帝也。
是時董卓遷天子都長安，卓因留洛陽。朗父防為治書御史，當徙西，以四方雲擾，乃遣朗將家屬還本縣。或有告朗欲逃亡者，執以詣卓，卓謂朗曰：「卿與吾亡兒同歲，幾大相負！」朗因曰：「明公以高世之德，遭陽九之會，清除群穢，廣舉賢士，此誠虛心垂慮，將興至治也。威德以隆，功業以著，而兵難日起，州郡鼎沸，郊境之內，民不安業，損棄居產，流亡藏竄，雖四關設禁，重加刑戮，猶不絕息，此朗之所以於邑也。願明公監觀往事，少加三思，即榮名並於日月，伊、周不足侔也。」卓曰：「吾亦悟之，卿言有意！」
臣松之案朗此對，但為稱述卓功德，未相箴誨而已。了不自申釋，而卓便云「吾亦悟之，卿言有意」！客主之辭如為不相酬塞也。
朗知卓必亡，恐見留，即散財物以賂遺卓用事者，求歸鄉里。到謂父老曰；「董卓悖逆，為天下所讎，此忠臣義士奮發之時也。郡與京都境壤相接，洛東有成臯，北界大河，天下興義兵者若未得進，其勢必停於此。此乃四分五裂戰爭之地，難以自安，不如及道路尚通，舉宗東到黎陽。黎陽有營兵，趙威孫鄉里舊婚，為監營謁者，統兵馬，足以為主。若後有變，徐復觀望未晚也。」父老戀舊，莫有從者，惟同縣趙咨將家屬俱與朗往焉。後數月，關東諸州郡起兵，衆數十萬，皆集熒陽及河內。諸將不能相一，縱兵鈔略，民人死者且半。乆之，關東兵散，太祖與呂布相持於濮陽，朗乃將家還溫。時歲大饑，人相食，朗收恤宗族，教訓諸弟，不為衰世解業。
年二十二，太祖辟為司空掾屬，除成臯令，以病去，復為堂陽長。其治務寬惠，不行鞭杖，而民不犯禁。先時，民有徙充都內者，後縣調當作船，徙民恐其不辨，乃相率私還助之，其見愛如此。遷元城令，入為丞相主簿。朗以為天下土崩之勢，由秦滅五等之制，而郡國無蒐狩習戰之備故也。今雖五等未可復行，可令州郡並置兵，外備四夷，內威不軌，於策為長。又以為宜復井田。往者以民各有累世之業，難中奪之，是以至今。今承大亂之後，民人分散，土業无主，皆為公田，宜及此時復之。議雖未施行，然州郡領兵，朗本意也。遷兖州刺史，政化大行，百姓稱之。雖在軍旅，常麤衣惡食，儉以率下。雅好人倫典籍，鄉人李覿等盛得名譽，朗常顯貶下之；後覿等敗，時人服焉。鍾繇、王粲著論云：「非聖人不能致太平。」朗以為「伊、顏之徒雖非聖人，使得數世相承，太平可致」。
魏書曰：文帝善朗論，命祕書錄其文。孫盛曰：繇旣失之，朗亦未為得也。昔「湯舉伊尹，而不仁者遠矣」。易稱「顏氏之子，其殆庶幾乎！有不善未嘗不知，知之未嘗復行」。由此而言，聖人之與大賢，行藏道一，舒卷斯同，御世垂風，理無降異；升泰之美，豈俟積世哉？「善人為邦百年，亦可以勝殘去殺」。又曰「不踐跡，亦不入于室」。數世之論，其在斯乎！方之大賢，固有間矣。
On the 22nd year of the Jian'an era, he accompanied Xiahou Dun and Zang Ba among others in an expedition against Wu. Once they reached Juchao, the soldiers fell ill from a epidemic. [Sima] Lang personally inspected [the soldiers] and distributed medicine to them. He fell ill and died. He was 47 years old. His last will stated that [he was to be buried dressed in] cotton clothes and a fujin, avoiding everyday clothes. The people of [Yan] province would miss him. When thee Bright Emperor [of Wei] ascended the throne, he enfeoffed [Sima] Lang's son, [Sima] Yi, as the Marquis of Changwu District with 100 taxable households. The son of [Sima] Lang's brother who was [Sima] Fu, [Sima] Wang, was also adopted into [Sima] Lang's lineage. When [Sima] Yi died, [Sima] Wang's son, [Sima] Hong succeeded him.
建安二十二年，與夏侯惇、臧霸等征吳。到居巢，軍士大疫，朗躬巡視，致醫藥。遇疾卒，時年四十七。遺命布衣幅巾，歛以時服，州人追思之。〔一〕明帝即位，封朗子遺昌武亭侯，邑百戶。朗弟孚又以子望繼朗後。遺薨，望子洪嗣。
〔一〕The Book of Wei stated: Before [Sima] Lang died, he said to the officers: "I received great favor from the nation, supervising a land of 10,000 li, but my deeds were miniscule and unfinished because I fell ill from a epidemic and I could not save myself. I betrayed the nation's kindness. After I die, [dress me in] cotton clothes and a fujin, avoiding everyday clothes [for my burial]. Do not disobey my will."
〔一〕《魏書》曰：朗臨卒，謂將士曰：「刺史蒙國厚恩，督司萬里，微功未效，而遭此疫癘，旣不能自救，孤負國恩。身沒之後，其布衣幅巾，歛以時服，勿違吾志也。」
〔二〕The (Jìnzhūgōngzàn) states: [Sima] Wang, styled Zichu, was [Sima] Fu's eldest son. He had talent and intuition. During the Xianxi era, he reached the Excellency over the Masses. He entered Jin to be enfeoffed as Prince of Yiyang and was promoted to Elite Commandant and Grand Marshal. At the time, [Sima] Fu served as Supreme Chancellor; father and son occupied the high Excellency posts, and since dynasties came by, there was no such case. [Sima] Hong, styled Kongye, was enfeoffed as Prince of Hejian.
〔二〕《晉諸公贊》曰：望字子初，孚之長子。有才識，早知名。咸熈中位至司徒，入晉封義陽王，遷太尉、大司馬。時孚為太宰，父子居上公位，自中代已來未之有也。洪字孔業，封河間王。
Previously, [Sima] Lang was accompanied by Zhao Zi when they both moved. [Zhao Zi's] office reached Minister of Ceremonies; he was regarded as a fine scholar by the world.
初朗所與俱徙趙咨，官至太常，為世好士。
〔一〕[Zhao] Zi was styled Junchu. His son, [Zhao] Feng, was styled Zizhong. In Jin, he was General of Chariots and Cavalry, and was enfeoffed as Marquis of Dongpingling. See the (baiguanmingzhi).
