He Qi - 賀齊

He Qi, styled Gongmiao, was from Shanyin, Kuaiji.[1] When young, he served as a commandery official and became Chief of Yan. A county official, Si Cong, was frivolous and brave, doing evil. [He] Qi wanted to punish him, but his registrar admonished this, saying, "[Si] Cong is from a major clan in the county, and the Shanyue are affiliated with him. Today, if you punish him, tomorrow, enemies will come!" When [He] Qi heard this, he was incensed, and he immediately beheaded [Si] Cong. [Si] Cong's relatives thus joined together, and their force numbered over one thousand people, raising an army to attack the county. [He] Qi gathered officials and people, opening the city gates then making a surprise attack on them, and defeated them greatly; this mightiness shaked the Shanyue. Later, the people of Taimo and Fengpu rebelled, so [He Qi] shifted to acting Chief of Taimo, where he punished evil and nurtured good. Within a month, all was pacified.

〔一〕Yu Yu's Book of Jin states: The He Clan's original Surname was the Qing Clan's. [He] Qi's junior uncle, [Qing] Chun, had a Confucian education and had a good reputation. During the (An) Emperor's reign, he served as Palace Attendant, Grand Administrator of Jiangxia, then left office. He, Huang Qiong of Jiangxia, and Yang Hou of Hanzhong were all conscripted into an Excellency's army. To avoid the name taboo of the (An) Emperor's father, the Virtuous August Emperor[; Liu Qing], he changed [his surname] to the He clan. [He] Qi's father, [He] Fu, was Chief of Yongning.
