Artwork Description: "We often take our physical and social structures for granted - We assume that we have control over nature thanks to our advances in science, landscaping and agriculture. Once in a blue moon, however, we're reminded by the Bow that our structures exist on mother nature's terms."
URBAN THEME: Urban Politics
Artist's Bio: Gianluca Cross-Bussoli [dʒanˈluːka kɹɑs ˈbusːəli] is a student in the Bachelor of Design in City Innovation, born in Calgary on April 29th, 2005. Ever since they were a wee little lad, they were obsessed with technology, trains, art and worldbuilding. As time went on, Gianluca would accrue an interest in all sorts of things - Politics, history, mathematics, every single thing covered in the Alberta high school curriculum, and for our sake, urban planning and design.
Artist's statement: When we, as western society, think about our world, we consider it from the reference point of man-made structures, physical and socially-constructed. In Calgary especially, we take for granted our manicured lawns, the invasive species that constitute them, and the wildlife which they displace. However, nature isn't simply submitting to our will - as we continue to suffocate the planet, droughts will be drier, wildfires stronger, cold snaps colder, and floods more devastating than we can possibly prepare for. We fall victim to the immune system of nature.
