Artwork Description: This photo collage depicts two different points of mobility in Calgary's city centre, using the vantage point of a less-traveled section of the +15 system to look down on the pedestrians below. I've been very interested in the ways Calgary's architecture reveals social divides and affects mobility during the seasons.
URBAN THEMES: Urban Mobility
Artist's Bio: William Armstrong is a visual artist from Red Deer, Alberta. He is a graduate of Red Deer Polytechnic as well as the Alberta University of the Arts, where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2023. He is currently working towards his Master of Fine Art in Scotland at the Glasgow School of Art.
Artist's statement: In my practice, I am concerned with how walking as a method of movement can impact the ways we perceive the urban landscape, particularly in places where walking is discouraged by the layout of said environment. My work draws from my own photography in the places I walk through, often highlighting overlooked or unusual perspectives in the city.
