Artwork Description: Concrete Gardens reimagines Calgary's downtown as a vibrant hub of community interaction. In response to the city's sprawling layout and the dwindling appeal of its central district to families, this project embraces the concept of (re)public-ing the hollow city. By transforming a multi-use building into a vibrant community hub, Concrete Gardens seeks to bridge the gap between residents and the public, fostering continuous interaction and revitalizing the urban landscape. Central to the project's formal strategy is the concept of parasitic architecture. By seamlessly integrating with its context, Concrete Gardens not only adapts to its surroundings but also enriches them, creating a symbiotic relationship with the parent building and the broader urban environment. Moreover, drawing inspiration from Calgary's lack of topographic relief, the design maximizes sun exposure and panoramic views, enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors. Presenting a bold statement about the potential for reinvigorating urban spaces and creating a more inclusive and sustainable cityscape.
