Artwork Description: Based from my university project and a rendering commission for a university magazine, the Park and Play Initiative is my vision to combat the over reliance to vehicles, and to create a space for humans to interact with one another. I believe that parking spaces have a lot of potential than just being a "place to park your vehicles". Therefore, we should start to find ways to utilize these spaces to be more human-centric and environmentally sustainable.
URBAN THEME: Urban Intervention
Artist's Bio: Hi! I'm Kristian! I am currently a 3rd year Urban Studies student from the University of Calgary and a graduate of Architecture from the Far Eastern University, Philippines. I usually use CAD and 3D modelling software for digital works while I draw using pen and ink most of the time. Most of my architectural projects center around sustainable environments through architecture that promote relationships between humans, and the built and natural environments. When I am not doing art, I spend most of my time reading novels, watching anime and movies, playing video games, and most importantly, building model kits.
Artist's statement: "A building is nothing but a pile of organized rubble until humanity intervenes” is a philosophy that I hold dearly to this day as a designer as it is a reminder that we, as humans, have the power to give meaning to the buildings that we design. As long as we keep our humanity intact, we can create spaces (or infrastructures) that serve meaning and purpose for the greater good. This belief helped me to create architecture that values human connection with nature that can result in sustainable developments.
