URBAN THEME: Urban Innovation
Artist's Bio: Max Webber is a graduated student from the Department of Geography at the University of Calgary with a major in Urban Studies and a minor in Architectural Studies. Since a young age he has created sculptural and functional woodworking pieces and sold them at craft shows and online. Throughout university, Max has found ways to combine his studies in urbanism and design with his artistic background, creating public art events and community focused design activities. In his current role at the City of Calgary, he is researching ways public art, architecture, and events can take habitat in vacant spaces throughout the city to increase vibrancy and inspire community.
Artist's statement: I am greatly influenced by a multidisciplinary view of art as a practice. I would never call myself ‘just a woodworker’ or ‘focused on architecture,’ because I believe great art is influenced by many moments in time around the world. My favourite things to work on are projects that require new or borrowed skills to accomplish something entirely unique - I love it when I have the opportunity to combine two styles into something else, or when I get to deploy several processes in a single project e.g. CAD software integrated into traditional carpentry, or public engagement as a decision making tool in public art.
